Wind in The Willows

May 2010

Author, Martin Riley, visited year 6 to ask them to review Kenneth Graham’s book, Wind in The Willows.  The reason for this was that Martin was writing a play version of the story, which was going to be performed by the Ratatat Theatre Company on a tour of the North of England between May and July 2010.  In their guided reading groups, the children read different sections of the book, discussed the relevant section and wrote a review of their particular part.

At a later date, Martin came back into school, and discussed the story with the children – showed them pictures of the characters and noted down overall contributions as to what they thought should be included in the script.

Martin took the children’s reviews with him, and completed the script, with the whole cast coming into school on 4 May to perform the play in front of the children before embarking on their tour.  Some of the children’s ideas and words had been incorporated in the script, a fact which made the children very proud.

Martin is due back in school to get the children’s thoughts on the play itself, and Y3 children who also wrote a review on the performance.
