Clifton Green School is OUSTANDING for teaching English.

Her Majesty’s Inspectors visited Clifton Green School last month as part of a Subject Survey Programme to inspect English. Mrs Susan Bowles HMI said,

“The overall effectiveness of English is outstanding.”

This included outstanding in the children’s Achievement in English, the quality of the English Curriculum, the effectiveness of the Leadership and Management for English. 

Mrs Bowles notes, “The standard of work seen was impressive; pupils read capably for their age and many express themselves well in speech and writing…Pupils enjoy English and talk enthusiastically about what they learn through a great variety of lively and purposeful activities. Teaching has a consistent quality across the school which leads to excellent progress.”

No areas for improvement were identified beyond those the school has set itself.

Headteacher Sheila Audsley said, “I am really delighted that the school has been given and OUTSTANDING grade for English, as, indeed, are the staff and the school Governors. I am immensely proud of the children, the commitment from all the staff, the diligence from the school governors, the unstinting work from our volunteer helpers, the assistance from the Local Authority and the excellent support the parents have truly given to help all the children succeed and do well.

It is a true recognition that everyone has worked together to ensure all the children receive the very best education. At Clifton Green “children do matter and children come first” and this remains at the forefront of our work for the school.”

A party was held for the children and everyone connected to the school. Kirsten England, the Chief Executive of the City of York Council gave the opening address attributing Clifton Green’s success.

The school thanked Mrs Jean Calverley, Deputy Headteacher, for her excellent work  as the English Leader at the school for the past 9 years.
