On Thursdays we usually have a KS1 Bible assembly but today our friends David and Margaret came to our Book Assembly. David was dressed as Harry Potter but we still got him to sing “Hey it’s a Lovely Day” with us!

Food to Share

25th February, 2010

A sociable and relaxing evening was had by everyone who attended the Food to Share evening on Thursday, 25th February.

The evening began with the beautiful Indian dancing from Perveen.  She entertained us with a dance routine of four different styles of Indian dance.  The children were eager to learn and demonstrate their Indian dancing skills after Perveen showed them the movements – this was very much enjoyed by the parents.

The rest of the evening was spent enjoying the delicious dishes made by parents – the tastes and smell were tantalising!   Everyone was given a chance to sample food that they may never have tasted before and parents were able to share their knowledge of cooking!

Many different countries were represented during the evening from:

India, Taiwan, Poland, United Kingdom, Turkey, Nepal, Thailand and Germany.  This is just a sample of the diversity within out school and demonstrates how this contributes to the success of our pupils to socialise with each other.

Many parents have expressed an interest in gathering recipes from the evening to put into a book – I will endeavour to pursue this – watch this space!

Venturefest 2010

Venturefest Yorkshire is a one-day business conference and exhibition event which took place in the Knavesmire Stand at York Racecourse.  The event focuses on encouraging enterprise, science, technology and IT and is an expo of Yorkshire’s most inspiring science, technology and knowledge entrepreneurs.

The spirit of Venturefest is all about encouraging innovation and potential entrepreneurs.  It is important that creativity is identified and nurtured at the earliest possible age.

Year 6 Clifton Green Primary School got the opportunity to participate in this event through NYBEP.  At the beginning of last term they took part in an animation project – to put into pictures (and then into motion) their vision of the poem written by W H Auden, The Night Mail.

As a reward for putting together a talk to present to the Year 1’s in the school (about the above project),  Kelsey Finney, Grace Hobson and Jessica Taylor put up an exhibition and manned it at Venturefest.  They spoke eloquently and with enthusiasm to everyone that approached their stand – explaining how the project began, how it developed and what they had learnt from the whole process.

During the day all three girls had the opportunity to interview a member of STEM (a national scheme aimed at raising awareness and creating excitement about Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).  This gave them an insight into how their interviewee got into their job, what they wanted to do when they were younger - as part of the schools ongoing aspirations work.

All three girls thoroughly enjoyed their day out, were encouraged by the things that they saw at other exhibits and enthused when talking to other delegates – a very productive day!

Games Night - 2010

A fun evening was had by all that attended the Games Night on 4th February, 2010.  The evening kicked off with the fast and furious game of Beetle – the noise of the rolling dice and laugher reverberated around the hall!

This was quickly followed by a warm-up game of bingo – which then lead us to a breather for refreshments.  However, our brains were still to be tested with the children’s and adult’s picture quizzes.  Then it was down to the serious business of a final game of bingo – the atmosphere was very tense as children and adults focused on the winning numbers!

Congratulations to all – everyone was a winner!

Thank you to all who supported this evening – our next family evening is to be held on 25th February with our Food To Share evening – an event which celebrates the diversities within our community.

Reach for the Stars!

The picture is of the table decoration that Miss Holdsworth and her Year 4 children did for the National Education Conference held in York recently – schools were invited to enter a table decoration and most of them did.

This was a competition and our entry came 2nd winning the school £50 worth of Art materials.

The decoration was brought back to school and can be seen in the Library.

Everyone will agree it’s motto of "Reach for the Stars"  sums up pupil attitudes at Clifton Green!

School Library Artwork.

This week children will have noticed some artwork appearing in the Library. This time it is not our own work but some wonderful imaginative illustrations by local artist Sue Wallis. Sue came to visit the school and talked about our ideas for the library and got a feel for how we felt about our library. Then she created these lovely, imaginative pieces for us. There are panels on the door saying “Welcome to our Library” and a picture with a quote from Dr Seuss saying;-

“The more that you read, the more things that you know, The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go!”

There are lots of little things to find in the pictures and there are a number of fictional characters portrayed that we can weave our own stories around.

Parents and friends that have not seen the new artwork are very welcome to pop in and have a look.

Lord Mayor of York
Visits Our School

January 2010

On a very snowy Friday morning we were honoured by the visit of The Lord Mayor of York.

He spoke to the whole school in the hall and had a cup of tea and a scone. He has been trying to loose weight so the picture shows him resisting a scone and choosing instead a carrot and an apple!

The Lord Mayor, Lady Mayoress and The Sherriff and her Consort then went round all the classes meeting the children.

They stopped to talk to Year 6 children in the library about their dreams and aspirations when they were young.

It was wonderful for the children to hear some of York’s civic history and get to meet the civic party .

What is 11 MILLION TAKEOVER DAY?

11 MILLION TAKEOVER DAY gives children and young people a chance to get involved in decision making, have their say and show adults what they can do.

This happens through children and young people going into places like schools, youth clubs, organisations, companies, shops and other places to ‘takeover’ and show adults what they can do! All children and young people can take part, and you can choose how you do it. Just make sure an adult knows what you’re up to.

Last year, 11 MILLION TAKEOVER DAY was a huge success across the country. Over 700 organisations took part, and least 17,000 children and young people had their say through 11 MILLION TAKEOVER DAY!

Last year in YORK young people were involved in designing a poster campaign to promote positive images of young people, children from primary schools worked with the police to audit their local environment, young people worked with trading standards to test purchase cigarettes, children from a primary school were involved in working with elected members.

Help us, dear Lord, to produce good with our lives and to reject all that is wrong and false.

As we share the food that harvest brings may we also share our time, our money and ourselves with others, even though at times this may be hard for us to remember and hard for us to do.

Amen.

ARTS AWARD PRESENTATION
23 SEPTEMBER 2009

The children, who have just transferred to their secondary school, arrived to a special evening event with their parents and carers to celebrate and receive certificates for passing a national qualification given by the Arts Council and Trinity Guildhall London for their achievement in the arts.
The aim of the Arts Award (which is open to young people aged 11-25) is to enable them to develop skills in leadership, communication and planning all of which will help when the children transfer to secondary school and/or onto further education or work. Every child was presented with their own certificate and enjoyed sandwiches and buns which were laid on as part of the celebration.

Postman Pat and The New Library opening…..

Every Child a Reader at Clifton Green School

Clifton Green School is really determined to make every child a reader during this new school year. To support the school’s belief that every child should be able to read by the age of 11 the school has made a huge investment in books and a brand new “state of the art” library.

Our new library is evidence of how much we want to promote reading throughout the school. All the children from Nursery to Year 6 use it. We employ teacher librarians to run it and have pupil librarians to help with the book borrowing. Our library is at the heart of children’s learning at Clifton Green School and now it has been completely redecorated and refurbished to make it an even more special place.

As part of a special treat a children’s author, John Cunliffe (Postman Pat books)  officially opened the new library and talked to the children in Year 6 and Year 2 about his favourite books.

So far, the school has had a fantastic year in 2009. Our national test results were excellent, we were judged outstanding by Ofsted, we were awarded a Gold (the highest) standard of Artsmark and now we have what is probably the best Primary School Library in York!

John Cunliffe –the author who opened our library.

John Cunliffe has been involved with children's books as a parent, reader, reviewer, librarian, teacher and author for most of his life. He was a librarian for over thirty years, including two years as British Council Librarian in Yugoslavia. John then moved on to teaching, and eventually became an Advisory Teacher on educational computing. He has had over 200 books published since 1964 and in 1988 began to write full-time. He has written extensively for television, and also presented fifty episodes of "Rosie and Jim", as well as broadcasting on local radio and television for many years.

Music update

After our successful Pop Connection concerts we are keen for existing and new members to join the Clifton Green Choir led by Helen Warry in September. Watch out for audition details in the Autumn term.

We also need children to take up peripatetic instrumental lessons in September. Classes available are strings-violins/keyboard/guitar. We are also hoping to start a brass group. Forms are available from Mrs Illing.

The other music clubs will continue as normal

Recorder for Y4 to Y6

Ocarina for Y2 and Y3

Little Singers for Y1 and Y2

Choir for Y3/4/5 and 6

THE YOSCARS

Last month, (June 2009) Y2, Y3 and Y6 children entered the YOSCARS.

The Yoscars (York Oscars) are to promote the ongoing development and creative use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in our schools and are open to budding young film-makers aged between three and 16 years of age from schools across the city.

This month, we received the news that the Y3 children were amongst the finalists for their short digital animation film and were invited to a glitzy 'Oscar'-style event at York Racecourse. To mark the occasion, we hired a huge stretched white limousine but we didn’t tell the children! You can imagine their reaction when the vehicle drove onto the playground to take them to the event! Even more surprises when the panel of independent judges announced that Clifton Green were the winners in the Y3/Y4 category!

The whole school celebrated the wonderful success of these young seven year olds!

POP CONNECTIONS

Perhaps a very moving occasion this month (June 2009) was a POP CONNECTIONS Concert which was performed in another local church. Mrs Illing, the school’s Music Leader, organised the project with Dave Caswell and the POP Connections Director, Andy Silver.

The children had a great time experiencing how to work as part of a choir, dancing along with choreographed movements and taking part in their own big choir show, all singing Christian songs with positive, life affirming lyrics which were recorded on our own special Clifton Green CD!

The two evening concerts were really momentous occasions with parents, friends of the school and staff very touched to see the children thoroughly enjoying their singing and the lovely confidence which shone from all of them!

Beningbrough Hall and Gardens

Children and staff from years 1 and  2 had a great time at Beningbrough.  We sowed peas and beans in the potting shed and tasted vegetables and herbs in the kitchen garden.  We explored the park and woodland  and took bark rubbings from the trees.  The gardeners helped us to plant the first of more than1000 sunflowers that will grow in the garden of Beningbrough Hall this summer.  We think they will look beautiful and hope to get back to see them growing in the summer.

Mental Maths Challenge

On Friday 13th February we held a Mental Maths Challenge. All classes took parts, heats were held in the classrooms then the finalists competed in the hall. There were super Mathematical prizes for the winners.

MENTAL MATHS CHALLENGE

Mental Maths  - one of the most important aspects of numeracy – was highlighted throughout the school during the first part of the Spring term – culminating in a mental maths challenge which took place in the school hall on Friday 13th February.

In the days prior to the event – children practised the various skills required, including their ever important multiplication tables.

During the week of the challenge – two finalists were selected from each class to go forward to the final – held in the school hall – in front of their classmates.  These children had to answer numerous questions on all aspects of mental maths – with a winner being produced after some very close contests indeed.

At the end of the afternoon – the whole school gathered for a special assembly, to say “well done” to all those involved.  Each of the finalists was presented with a calculator as a runners-up prize – while the outright winner in each age group received a numeracy based game.

The event was a complete success, giving the children the opportunity to develop their mental maths strategies – and realise that these skills are relevant not only in school, but for the rest of their lives.
