Mr Brown and Mr Murray took the competitors in a mini bus and our team of Jessica Flannery, Luke Hobsion, Laura Kenny, Sarah Judge and Willow Pollock were in the Intermediate Swimmers section. They all had a great time not winning this time but making family and school very proud of them.

Mini - Tennis

On 24th January two teams from Clifton Green took part in a mini tennis tournament.

One team of Lucas Greaves, Chloe Jackson, Christopher Prophet and Jessica Flannery won and the other team of Brandon Jackson, Kelsey Pateman, Nathan Storr and Alicia Gardner were runners up. Well done to our tennis teams!

Pantomime in School !!

The whole school enjoyed a fabulous New Year treat when Chaplain's Pantomime company visited school to perform Jack and the Beanstalk. We all thoroughly enjoyed it

....Oh YES WE DID!

After School Care

The following letter has been sent to all parents on 5th January explaining the new arrangements for After School Care.  It is hoped that the new arrangements will be helpful and convenient for parents and that it answers any questions they may have.......

Mrs L Comer (Chair of Governors)

5th January 2011

Dear Parent,

AFTER SCHOOL CARE

We are providing after school care until the Easter holidays starting this Monday 9th January. This is initially for a trial period only in order for us to see if there is enough demand to make the provision permanent.

I hope this letter answers the questions you may have.

Who can use the care?

Any children from Reception up to Year 6 can use the after school care.

Do I need to register?

Yes – if we do not have the registration form your child cannot come along to the club. The form is attached to this letter

Who will be running the club?

Mrs Lockitt, Mrs Britton, Miss Hudson and Mr McGrath will initially be running the club

What will the children do?

We haven’t finalised exactly what will happen until we see how many children we have and what age they are. Children will be provided with a drink and a snack and we would then expect them to play games both inside and outside, have an opportunity to complete any homework if they want to, and take part in art and craft activities.

What time will it run too?

The care will run until 5.20pm, but this may change depending on parents needs.

How much will it cost?

The cost is initially £5 per session although there is a chance this may rise if we are not covering our costs. Please be aware that the cost is £5 per session regardless of what time the children arrive or are picked up. We are unable to charge less even if your child goes to an after school club first or is picked up at 4pm.

Other after school care in York costs a minimum of £6.50 per hour so we are trying to provide this service as cheaply as possible.

How much notice do I need to give?

Unlike the current arrangement for breakfast club your child cannot just arrive on the day. We need to know on a Monday morning which days your child will be attending throughout the week so that we can plan accordingly.

When and how do I pay?

Payment for the week or the month needs to be brought to the office or sent to school with your child on a Monday. We will provide envelopes for this. Cheques can be made out to City of York Council.

If I have more than one child do I get any discount?

We do not plan any discounts for families with more than one child but please come and talk to me about this if you need to.

Please return the attached form in order to register your child for after school care.

If we do not receive the form your child will not be able to attend the care. Please write any comments or questions you have on the form or come or speak to Mrs Lockitt or Mrs Britton.

Kind Regards,

D. Brown

Headteacher

Children in Need

We supported Children in Need today (18-11-2011) - with a spotty non uniform day. Pictures attached.

Children made a donation of 5p to come spotty
and  20p for a special biscuit made
by teaching assistant Helen Brittain.

AND FROM THE YORK PRESS........

MOUSTACHES are rife in York this Movember, with Clifton Green Primary School teachers adding to the number of York men sporting facial hair for charity.

The 11 male members of staff at the school, on Water Lane, have been a source of amusement for the children, who have been given weekly updates in assembly on how the moustache growing is going.

Mr White, one of the teachers involved, said that the female staff, children and parents have all been very supportive so far with many giving donations.

He said: “It's good that it highlights men’s health issues as there's not a lot in the news – it's something that challenges the pink events.”

The men are not sure how much money they’ve raised so far but are hoping to raise as much as possible as team Clifton Green Primary.

For some, it is not the most challenging fundraiser they’ve completed with a couple of the teachers having climbed The Three Peaks twice, both in 2006 and 2008.

With all the male teachers in the school involved, it’s provided a cue for male bonding, with the men complaining to each other about the itchiness of their moustaches.

Some of the fairer-haired teachers have also encountered problems growing the best moustache, with Mr White adding: “If you're blond like me, you can't actually see it.”

To sponsor them go to uk.movember.com.

Harvest Festival 2011

Mr Brown did an assembly and all the classes did a short presentation, a song or a poem

.

Year 6 invited senior citizens to afternoon tea and they watched the class items too.

They all took a gift home from the harvest produce sent in by parents.

Yes we can master the game of Chess !!

Chess Training Day was organised by York Chess Club and had children from different York schools including Clifton Green.
The Lord Mayor and Hugh Bailey MP came along.

A chance to try Orientering

Orienteering was on Clifton Backies and was organised by EBORienteers.
It had world class orienteers there and also beginners courses and instructors. Our pupils enjoyed the unusual experience.

Generation Cookery Competition

At the weekend (24/25 Sept 2011) there was a cookery competition held in York.

Several children from Clifton Green and their parents entered .  It was the Generation Cookery Competition  held at the Guildhall as part of the York Food Festival with children from primary and secondary schools all over York. Antonio in Year 2 came second with his Scotch Eggs Recipe.

Well done Antonio!!

All children received a marble plaque for ‘Outstanding attitude and effort in 2010~2011’

Year 6 completed their time at Clifton Green Primary School with a spectacular performance of their play ‘Toy Shop Trouble’.  The children performed a matinee show on Tuesday, 19th July along with two packed evening performances on the 19th and 20th July.  The audience had an hour of laughter at the ‘jokes’ and entertainment as the children sang and performed their show.

Despite it being the children’s last week at primary school, work has not stopped!  This week the children completed their Bronze Arts Award and we are delighted to announce that they all passed with flying colours.  The moderator (Kate Plumb) spent a morning looking at all of the portfolios and was quite taken aback at the quality, imagination and creativity of the children’s work.  She commented that the portfolios showed the journeys the children had taken in personal development, self-awareness and skills of challenges.

The children have demonstrated this year, that they are a group who have met and relished the challenges they have faced – they have given 100% in effort and attitude in everything they have done and we hope they continue with this, not only into secondary school but throughout their lives.  As a school, we recognise the help and support the children have received from their parents and carers and thank you for encouraging your children (especially with homework!) and for supporting the school.

Sporting Giants

On the 12th July the schools in York gathered on their playgrounds at 1:30 p.m. to parade their Sporting Giant.

The children at Clifton Green gathered on their school yard and paraded the dance they have been learning over the past few weeks.

Fun was had by children and staff alike with the Sporting Giant taking pride of place amongst the children.

Visit to the Yorkshire Museum

Both Year 1 classes enjoyed a fantastic trip this week (w/e 17/6/2011) to the Yorkshire Museum.

We took part in a workshop on dinosaurs and even got to make our very own dinosaur fossils.

We also had a chance to look around the museum and learnt lots of new historical facts about York.

Silk Screen Painting with Jacqueline James

The children in year 6 had a wonderfully creative time designing and painting with silk paints onto a silk screen in June, taught by Jacqueline James, a visiting textile artist.

The first thing the children had to do was to draw their design onto paper and then transfer this onto their silk screen with gutta.  Once this process was completed it was time for fun!  They ‘painted’ their pictures with the silk paints, experimenting with the colours; blending and watching their designs come to life.

The children’s finished pictures were fabulous and they were delighted with their results.

If anyone is interest in viewing any of Jacqueline’s work then please visit her website  www.handwovenrugs.co.uk

Library Service History competition

Children in Mr. Murray’s class entered a city- wide York Library Service History competition.  Children were asked to answer questions by researching information from the library and the Internet.  The competition really helped sharpen research skills and luckily we had 3 winners from our class.  Yahoo!  Well done to all children for taking part.

KS1 and KS2 School Discos – 26th May

The children in years one and two set the evening off at 4:30.  They had an hour of dancing and games with a rest in the middle for a drink and biscuit.

The children had a wonderful time and were definitely ready for their beds by the end!

This was closely followed by the children from years three, four and five.  They danced and sang the evening away, again only stopping for a short time for a drink and biscuit.

All the children enjoyed this fun evening and are already looking forward to the next one!

Food To Share

19th May, 2011

A sociable and relaxing evening was had by everyone that attended the Food to Share evening on Thursday, 19th May, 2011.

The whole evening was very successful, beginning with the choir who sang us a couple of songs, before we began the wonderful experience of sampling some of the very tasty dishes the parents of Clifton Green Primary School had made to share with other families.

It was a fantastic opportunity for the families to discuss how the dishes were made, what ingredients were used and swapping their recipes!  We received very favourable comments about how much everyone had enjoyed themselves, and that the experience of sampling foods from across the world had been a really ‘tasty’ experience.

Many families have already told me what they want to cook for next year’s event and how much they are looking forward to it!

Once again, a number of people have asked about a school recipe book.  This is something we are thinking seriously about and planning for this is in the pipeline.

If you have any ideas about events to be held in the school please contact

Ann Prier, Extended Schools Coordinator

“How the Pizza Farm got it’s Name”

Ruby Bragan in Year 2 has won the writing competition to write “How the Pizza Farm got it’s Name” that we had a presentation in assembly about in the Spring Term. There were lots of entries from 50 schools and Ruby’s writing was the best! More details to follow but the prize is a visit to the Pizza Farm for her and all her class. More details later……..

HERE IS THE WINNING STORY..............

How The Pizza Farm got it’s Name.

Once magic was still happening there lived a farmer who had six children and a wife. First he had to plant some tomatoes, wheat, oilseed rape, garlic and onions. Then his children milked the cows.

Next he waited for the crops to grow. After that he and his wife put them on the table. They went to bed. The next day they found a hot and delicious pizza on the kitchen table and gobbled it all up. Next they grew all the ingredients for more pizzas and put them on the table. Then they hid behind a curtain but nothing happened!

Just then, in a twinkling of an eye, a dragon came through the door and made the delicious pizzas and he ran round the room and flames came through his mouth onto the pizza which cooked them to perfection. He ran outside and they ran after him and caught him.

The dragon said, “ You can keep me if you can guess my name.”

Finally they guessed his name. The dragon stayed with them and makes pizzas for visitors. Then he showed them how to make them. They changed the name of the farm to the Pizza Farm and put one of the pizzas made by the dragon in an exhibition to show visitors.

CLIFTON  GREEN CELEBRATES THE  ROYAL WEDDING

Our Street Party

Classes will be celebrating the wedding of our future King and his chosen bride, Kate, with various activities but we thought it might be nice if the children had something to keep that would remind them they were at Clifton Green when this  Royal Wedding took place.

To create a lasting souvenir of the Royal Wedding for children and families from Clifton Green we have had these lovely china mugs made with Prince William and Catherine Middleton on the front and the Clifton Green  School logo on the reverse.

These are available boxed to children, staff, family and friends of Clifton Green  for the special price of £4.

If you would like to buy a mug (or mugs) please copy out the order slip below and return to your class teacher with payment. Mugs ordered by Thursday 7th April will be with you before the Easter holiday. Mugs ordered on Friday or after the holiday will be delivered before the  Royal Wedding.

Interesting little snippet....
Mrs Middleton –  teaching assistant in FS2 is related to Kate and going to the wedding!
We look forward to hearing all about it.

Magic and Surprise day

On Friday the 25th March KS1 children all enjoyed a Magic and Surprise day. The highlight of the day was a visit from Winnie the Witch and her friend.

After a super performance by Mudpie Arts the children in Miss Mould’s , Mrs Calverley and Mrs Green’s, Mr White’s and Mrs Holmes and Mrs Bewley’s classes  had a little refreshment – a fairy cake and magic potatoes (crisps!)

This made a nice finish to an exciting topic of Traditional Tales which are always tinged with magic and surprise.

Drama Festival

On Saturday the 19th March we entered the York Schools Drama Festival. The group of children performing were from our Drama Club and were mostly from years 4 and 6. This year’s theme was the Beatles, and the interpretation we did was about the Beatles Visit to York in 1973.

The Fab Four appeared at the Rialto, a cinema that used to be in the city and many York people were able to see them as Beatle mania swept the country.

Our performance was great to watch and a lot of people said how good it was! The children who were in it thoroughly enjoyed the experience of performing to about 700 people in the University Central Hall. They also got to watch about ten their schools performing including 2 secondary schools.

Thank you to our directors Miss Holdsworth and Mrs Hobson and all the other adults who helped on the day ( Mrs Prier, Mrs Martin, Mrs Tuffen and Mrs Calverley) without whom this super event would not have been possible.

Football News

Match against St Lawrences Primary – Thursday 17th March

We won! 3:2. Mr Murray was delighted with their performance.

Man of the match was James Bragan who scored twice. Liam Fearn also scored.

In the picture Mr Brown congratulated them in Assembly – they are dressed for comic relief!

Comic Relief

We supported Comic Relief at Clifton Green and raised some money for children less fortunate than ourselves. The school council organised a “Dress as a  Country” day and everyone paid to come as a country. We had some amazing outfits  worn by staff and pupils. The best outfits in each class won a small prize but the main aim of today was to help people less fortunate than ourselves ….and have a laugh doing it!

Popular teacher and Acting Assistant Head,
Miss Wilkinson went off on maternity leave today . (18/3/2011)

We wish her good luck with the arrival of her new baby and her life as a family. The teachers had a baby shower for her today in the staffroom and you can see in the pictures they gave her a wooden, rocking crib! There were lots of other presents too and advice in a little booklet!  Her pregnancy has passed very quickly in school and we are sure she will be back after her leave.

We’ll keep everyone posted.   We’ll let you know if Miss Wilkinson and her partner choose any of the names suggested by the children although we have to say Wilko is extremely unlikely! - and if it is a boy or a girl!

New Star Cushions

This week we launched new star cushions – jazzy coloured star ones filled with beans – to replace the silver stars we had previously.
They were made by our talented teaching assistant Mrs Coombes and have the Clifton Green Star Writer badge in the centre.

This is a photo of the first KS1 recipients!

 “Little Singers Club”

“Little Singers Club”  meets on a Wednesday after school and is led by Mrs Lilley for KS1 children.

In the picture they are practicing a song “In the middle of the night” which they showed parents on Wednesday this week. Mrs Lilley is a blur of activity! This performance is a delightful mixture of percussion and singing which makes excellent entertainment. These children are hoping to perform a medley of songs in the Early Years festival in the Summer.

Mrs Lilley presented them with a performance certificate in Assembly today.

Sporting Giants

Sporting Giants was launched last March by UK Sport – City of York Council, York Gold and Sporting Giants are working alongside each other to promote sports and the Olympic Games in schools. As part of this project Sporting Giants came into school on Monday, 7th March to work with the Year 6 children to produce a giant puppet.  The children worked as a team building the frame of their puppet out of bamboo canes and tape – it eventually reached a huge 3 metres in height.  Everyone listened carefully to instructions and produced their puppet in record time! The rest of the school will now get involved in ‘decorating’ the marionette which will then take part in another workshop (for the year 6 children) in June to develop the movement of the puppet to produce a dance routine  which will finally have a role in The Giant Dance on Tuesday, 12th July, 2011.

Dear Parents and Carers,

I’m really happy to have started as Headteacher here at Clifton Green... finally.

Our school has a reputation across the city of York for its outstanding education, and as parents and carers you play a major role in the success of the school, so thank you for your ongoing support.

I want to take the opportunity to say a big thank you to Mrs Calverley for doing such an excellent job of leading the school over the last six months and to Mr Reed and Miss Wilkinson who have assisted her so ably.

I look forward to getting to know you over the next few months and working with you over the years ahead.  There will be a newsletter next week with more information and in the meantime please do introduce yourself if you see me outside.

Yours sincerely,

Clifton Green Footballers receive new coats.

The Clifton Green football team had a pleasant surprise this week as they were presented with brand new training coats by a local business. Cooltec Services of York and its owner Simon Walton have kindly sponsored the team for the year, offering a coat for each member of the team as part of the deal. All of this was arranged by Mr Atkin, whose son Charlie, plays in the school team so a big thank you should also go to him.
