An end of term treat!

We had great fun making the house of sweets from Hansel and Gretel.  Hansel and Gretel was one of the Traditional Tales we read earlier in the term.  We got the idea for the cake from a book called Debbie Brown’s Fairy Tale Cakes.

We made the house from cake and icing.  A special thank you to Marley and Caitlin, who brought in some of their own sweets to help decorate the house.

Toys.

This term we are looking at old toys and how they move. Here is a link for you to explore.

Paper Making

Here we are making paper with Miss James, the artist who visited Clifton Green during our arts week recently.

The Great Fire of London

Lady Lucy came to tell us about the Great Fire of London.

We helped her act out the story.

Samuel Pepys lived in London in 1666.  He wrote down what happened in his diary.

 London was busy and crowded.

The houses were built of wood.

The fire started at a baker’s shop in Pudding Lane.

People tried to put the fire out with buckets of water but it didn’t work.

The King ordered people to pull some houses down and blow some up with gunpowder.  At last the fire went out.

We are looking at traditional tales this term

We will be looking at Traditional tales this term and would like you
and your families to read lots of them.
The traditional tales told to children in England come from a rich
mixture of stories from all over the world. Collections written down
and published by the Brothers Grimm, Hans Anderson and others, became
popular over a hundred years ago. These formed the bulk of a new oral
tradition and are now what a lot of people remember as tradition tales
although many of these stories, of course, have their roots outside England.
Each morning we will be writing a sentence about one of this type of
 story.
Here is a link that helps you write your own traditional tale!

Here are some links for you to explore.

CLASS 3

Remember - Remember -The Fifth of November.........

The Bonfire Night Story

Four hundred years ago, in 1605, a man called Guy Fawkes and a group of plotters attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London with barrels of gunpowder placed in the basement. They wanted to kill King James and the king’s leaders.

Why did Guy Fawkes want kill King James 1st and the king’s leaders?
When Queen Elizabeth 1st took the throne of England she made some laws against the Roman Catholics. Guy Fawkes was one of a small group of Catholics who felt that the government was treating Roman Catholics unfairly. They hoped that King James 1st would change the the laws, but he didn't.

Catholics had to practise their religion in secret. There were even fines for people who didn't attend the Protestant church on Sunday or on holy days. James l passed more laws against the Catholics when he became king.

What happened?
A group of men led by Robert Catesby, plotted to kill King James and blow up the Houses of Parliament, there the laws that governed England were made. Guy Fawkes was one the group.

The plot was simple - the next time Parliament was opened by King James l, they would blow up everyone there with gunpowder.

The men bought a house next door to the parliament building. The house had a cellar which went under the parliament building. They planned to put gunpowder under the house and blow up parliament and the king.

Guy FawkesGuy Fawkes Discovered
Guy Fawkes was given the job to keep watch over the barrels of gunpowder and to light the fuse. On the morning of 5 November, soldiers discovered Guy hidden in the cellar and arrested him. The trail of gunpowder at his feet would never be lit.

Guy Fawkes was taken to the Tower of London. He was tortured and questioned about the other plotters. To start with he didn't tell the soldiers anything about the plot. But, eventually he started to tell the truth.

A Celebration
In celebration of his survival, King James ordered that the people of England should have a great bonfire on the night on November 5th.

The event is still commemorated annually in England on 5 November by fireworks and burning ‘guys’ (effigies) on bonfires. The searching of the cellars of Parliament before the opening of each new session, however, was not instituted until 1678.

Here is the class wall display celebrating Autumn

CLASS 4

 Recycling Scheme.

In addition to becoming the best class, M4 also run the school’s paper recycling scheme.  Waste paper is collected diligently from around the school by monitors in the morning and afternoon breaks. The paper is then collected by a local company ready to be turned into new paper and in turn saving another oxygen providing tree!

The recycling scheme can also be extended by allowing children to collect paper, old newspapers, junk mail etc. at home and then delivering it to school ready to be recycled.

Year 4 Football.

In year 4 children are also given the opportunity to practice and improve their football skills at the Wednesday dinner time football club.  All this effort is put to good use when the Year 4 football team plays other schools in York for highly competitive matches.

CLASS 5

Year 5 Residential
Visit to Carlton Lodge Outdoor Activity Centre!

Wow! What a fantastic three days!

The group of Year 5 pupils who attended the visit had an exciting, fun filled three days of energetic and challenging activities.

The children were involved in a number of demanding and tricky activities which tested their abilities, trust and communication skills.

Some of the activities which they had great fun in undertaking were;

Wall climbing, problem solving, kayaking, raft building, archery, orienteering, zip wire, leap of faith and high ropes!

The teachers had great fun watching the pupils do all the dishes after every meal, make their own lunch and their own beds, but best of all was the room inspections! Well done to the girls who won. You beat the boys! I wonder who will win next year?

The staff were extremely proud of all the pupils who went. It was amazing to see the children overcome such tough fears and show great confidence in what they achieved. Well done!

Thank you very much for the Parents who supported this visit.

Because the trip was so successful this year, we will hope to continue it for the future Year 5 pupils of Clifton Green Primary.

The photographs below show how much fun the children (and the staff) had.

CLASS 6 Mr B.

Y6 have been doing a river study in their Geography this term.

CLASS 6 Mr R.

Author Visit

Year 6 had a vsit from Richard Moverley an author who told them about the books he had written, and then held writing workshops with both classes.

He has had published The Reluctant Rajput, which is set in India and is part of the successful Egmont Banana series which ties in with the National Curriculum Key Stage 2.

The book follows the story of a small boy, Bhupinder, and his dreams and adventures. "It is an exciting story which is also humorous, there is lots of detail so readers can find out lots about life in India without it being boring," said Richard.

His previous book, Revenge of the Gods, was based in Egypt and was also inspired by Richard's own travels. It was based on  this book that Year 6 did their workshops.

Hassan is a poor comb seller in Cairo. He knows about the gods and pharaohs of Ancient Egypt - but he never dreams that they will come into his life. Then one day, he hears about a plan to rob a tomb. And the gods have always protected their treasures...

Richard will be coming back to school for World Book Day to work with classes in Years 3, 4 and 5.
