Sports Day 2007

We  had sports day on Tuesday 10th July for the KS1 children. We were delighted that we got the best weather of the week. This year was a very active sports day - run slightly differently with team winners. We hope you enjoyed it and would welcome any parent comments about the new format.

The customary choc ices hadn't changed however and all the children enjoyed one at the end!

Opening of Our Children's Centre

21st June 2007 saw, Patrick Scott officially opened our Children's Centre and we all had a party to celebrate.

Throughout the day the children learned Circus Skills with Leanne and later in the day thy gave demonstrations! In the afternoon there were craft workshops and parachute games.

Lots of other activities were onsite including the Urbie Bus, Toy Library Bus and Community Police Vehicles.

The Cannon Lee school band helped things go with a swing as did the choir from Burton Green School and our own Little Singers. There were Boomwhackers in the hall and Balloons were released outside at about 3.30pm.The Children's centre gave everyone a strawberry tea and a good time was had by all!

REMEMEMBRANCE

YVONNE STANFORD

DEPUTY HEADTEACHER OF KINGSWAY SCHOOL

1931 – 2007

Yvonne Stanford died last week and it is her funeral today. Many of you will not know who Yvonne is although there are just three teachers at Clifton Green who do.

Every school needs a Headteacher and every school needs a Deputy Headteacher, to cover if the Headteacher is absent. This was Yvonne’s role: Deputy Headteacher at Kingsway School for a long time before retiring in 1986. Over that time she taught many, many children and I am sure those children are now parents/grandparents of children who presently attend Clifton Green.

Yvonne is remembered and will always be remembered for her work as a teacher but also her contribution in York at that time, because she was the main organiser for York Primary School Netball and many of her meetings were held in our staff room. When she retired, she worked in schools on behalf of the Local Authority about children crossing roads safely. (Sergeant Fuzzybee!)

When she left, Yvonne embroidered the School prayer which presently hangs in the school entrance hall. It is a beautiful piece of sewing and the words say it all – that Clifton Green School is one of peace and friendship.

Now I have an interesting story to tell you about this embroidered framed work. In 1990, the school had a terrible fire and the staffroom, Headteacher’s Office, the school offices and entrance hall were thoroughly burnt. Everything was destroyed and every where was blackened with the smoke. However, the Fire Officers found, on the blackened wall in the entrance hall , the school prayer, undamaged – with no broken glass (even though the heat would have been intense) and the frame hardly burnt as well.

It was a miracle it had survived but maybe it survived because of the message in the school prayer which speaks of love, friendship and peace.

Yvonne was remembered today in the school assembly to bless and celebrate her life,  the work and commitment to teaching and as Deputy Headteacher of Kingsway School.

Dear God

We are thankful that Yvonne left us a school prayer for us all to live our lives by when we work in school. Bless and take care of her as she enters Your Heaven today.

This is our school,
Let peace dwell here.
Let the rooms be full of contentment.
Let love abide here,
Love of one another,
Love of all people, love of life itself,
And love of God.
Let us remember, that as many hands build a house,
So, many hearts make a school.'

Wow! What a fantastic three days Year 5 had.
There was lots of fun, masses of laughter and plenty of excitement.
Everybody had a super time and didn’t want to leave!

Monday 14th May

Problem Solving, Wall Climbing and Scavenger Hunt

Tuesday 15th May

High Ropes, Zip Wire, Raft Building, Kayaking and a Night Walk.

Wednesday 16th May

Archery and Orienteering.

Everyone worked well as a team, gained confidence, understood others strengths and weaknesses and pushed themselves to do their best.

Many found that they had over come plenty of fears including being worried about water, heights and just being away from home. But they all did it and I’m sure parents are just as proud as the teachers!

The teachers can’t wait to go again next year!

Enjoy the pictures of our fun but educational holiday!

My trip to Carlton Lodge
By Hakim Lazrak

On Monday morning I was so exited that as soon as I woke I kept on thinking about my wonderful trip that I had no breakfast! I went down stairs and I collected my bags and went to school. Every one was so exited they could not play any games. One hour later the coach arrived. Every one rushed to get there bags ready for the amazing trip.

Two hours later we were nearly there and finally I saw Carlton Lodge. The first activity I did was the wall climbing also I was the only one to reach the top. After, we did problem solving where we had to make a bridge out of two planks of wood. As soon as we finished problem solving it was five a clocks and me, Sam and Jake rushed into Williams’s room and we had a pillow fight. Later at night I went to sleep In my room there were Sam, Jake, and Philip and we were in room seven.  I could not sleep because Philip kept snoring!

The next day I had two bowls of sugar puffs before we did scavenger hunting. It was brilliant and so was the high ropes because I jumped off the leap of faith. I was not scared, but I was really brave. Then we had free time and we played with the Frisbee. After dinner I did kayaking and raft building .At night we did a night walk for two hours .T he last day we did orienteering. it was not that that good but I did enjoy the archery (I wish I could stay for a year)!

Following an extensive external assessment Clifton Green has been awarded the prestigious ICT Mark by Becta, the British Education Communications and Technology Agency, the government funded body responsible for promoting the use of ICT in Britain’s schools and colleges.

Sheila Audsley, Head teacher commented, “We are delighted to be awarded the ICT Mark. It recognises our positive approach to ICT and the benefits it is bringing to our children. Maths in the Community Week

All classes in the school are involved with Maths in the Community Week and are
enjoying a wide variety of activities.

We will show you here some of the activity and indicate which classes
have been involved with which activity.

Class H4 Visit to St. Luke’s church.

Last week our class went to St. Luke’s church to see how they use maths in the running of the church. Whilst we were there we were put into groups and everyone got a sheet to work on. We did different problems including measuring wine, sharing communion wafers, putting numbers on hymn boards and counting organ pipes.

                                                                             Holly

We hadn’t realised there was so much maths used in the church. My favourite activity was the one where we had to place all the numbers on the hymn board.

                                                                          Yaren

My favourite part was when we poured the wine in a glass to measure how many glasses it took to fill a jug. It was very interesting.

                                                                       Hannah

Following the visit we did some church problems of our own. For example, we worked out how to find the times of a wedding.

                                                                          Harry

Class B3 Visit of a Butcher

Mr Binns Y3 Class visited the butchers. The butcher showed them how he uses Maths in his job then he came into school and looked at the children's maths work.

Year One Visit to the Supermarket.

On a sunny, warm day, Year One embarked on a short walk to the local Costcutter supermarket. The purpose of the visit was to see where we could see maths being used within the shop.

On our arrival, we quickly spotted posters and signs in the shop window which displayed prices for food and discounts. We practised reading these signs and noticed that the store had many ‘buy one get one free’ offers!

Once inside we were shown how the shopkeeper used their till, entering numbers and collecting money from the customer. Then we saw how the shopkeeper counted out the change, placing the coins in the customer’s hand. Next, we walked through the aisles looking at price labels and counted how many packets of crisps were left on the shelf. We noticed all the Jaffa Cakes had been sold!

Year 2 went to the Post Office on Criton Avenue

We did a lot of work on the Post Office and sending letters. Everyone had a letter delivered at home from Miss Mould or Mrs Calverley. We made a post office in the corner of our classroom.

The postmaster showed us how he uses mathematics every day. He has to weigh parcels and letters and use charts to find out how much postage to put on items of post. He has to use the 24hour clock to know times of collections. He handles money and gives change.

We had a brilliant visit and even bumped into a postman on the way back!

This week in the Reception classes
we had a visit from a Paramedic in our community. She told the children all about her job and we were amazed just how much maths is involved!

  • ring 999 for the emergency services

  • long and short bandages

  • large and small square and rectangular dressings and plasters

  • rubber gloves with 5 fingers on each hand

  • 16 to 20 breaths to revive an adult-more for a child

  • minimum temperature-37degrees

  • heartbeat not too fast or slow

Next week we shall be thinking about the paramedic’s maths in the classroom!

Reports from the
York Primary School Council Conference
2007

When and Where

On Wednesday the 28th of February six children from Clifton Green Primary School Council went with a teacher to the York Primary School Council Conference in the Museum Gardens in York.  The conference started at 10.00am and finished at 2.30pm.

By Aaron Piccolo

Awards and Presentations

The first part of the conference took place in the Yorkshire Museum.  It started with the presentation of Healthy School Awards to some of the schools.  You can see a photo of Clifton Green School Council members outside the museum with our school’s Healthy School Award.

There were presentations from some of the schools showing us some of the things their school councils have improved or helped to set up.  There were some very good ideas which our school could take on board.  These included setting up a school basketball club and making a DVD to tell people about the school. The best idea in my point of view was the school reward system.  The idea of this was, each time you are good or helpful etc you get a crystal to put in your team’s pot.  At the end of the week, term, and year, the winning team gets a special treat.  I particularly liked this idea because it encourages good behaviour.

By Georgina Sherwood

Brain Gym

In between presentations there was something called Brain Gym.  Brain Gym is where you get shown some actions to do when a certain word is said.  Take ‘capital letter’ for example, when they said ‘capital letter’ you had to wave your hand in circles above your head and when they said ‘perimeter’ you crossed your arms over your chest and moved from side to side saying ‘round the outside’ over and over again.  I hope you like the sound of it.  It was fantastic!

By Alice Tuffen

Speed Dating

At the conference we did a lot of interesting things, one of them was speed dating.  This was not what you think.  Three children from our school council went to different tables and listened to three children from another school council telling us about something they have done in their school council, then we told them how we organise fund raising events in our school council.  We found out lots of new ideas and ways to do things and we gave them lots of different ideas.  We had lots of fun that day.

By Dion Holding

Lunch

We had our lunch in a building called the Hospitium.  This is a very old building.  We found out it is where the people who visited the monastery used to stay.  The adults brought us our lunches in a bag.  In our packed lunches we had a sandwich, juice, raisins, fruit and flapjack.  When we finished our lunch we came outside and Mrs Bewley took a photo of us on the stairs.

By Sillon Altin

Sports

After lunch we played sports in the Museum Gardens.  We did football, rounders and parachute games.  We had to work together with children from other schools.  We were really good at the parachute.  We had a red ball and a yellow ball.  We had to try and keep the two balls on the parachute for as long as possible.  The record was 20 seconds, but our group beat the record by 40 seconds.

By Yaren Kaya

We all agreed we had a very enjoyable and informative day.  We had fun but we learned a lot too.

York Junior Rally 2007

On a bright, sunny, Saturday girls from Clifton Green Primary took part in the annual netball rally at Clifton with Rawcliffe Junior School. Wearing the famous yellow and blue were:

Shay Paterson, Josie Thomas, Rose Bardy, Georgina Sherwood, Chloe Coulsen, Rubena Rahman, Charleigh Bundy, Harriet Sherwood (reserve), Emma Crawford (reserve)

Everyone played their part in the success which resulted in the girls reaching the semi-finals of the competition. After a monumental effort the girls just fell short and lost to New Earswick - well done to all the competitors. Thank you to all those who came to support and cheer on the girls – see you next year!

Miss K Wilkinson

National Rabbit Week

Two of our pupils, Melissa (aged 10) and Nicole (aged 11) have won prizes in a national writing competition run by Burgess Supafeeds for National Rabbit Week 22nd-28th January.

As part of our work at school children at Clifton Green learned how to look after small animals when we were visited in assembly by local vet, Andy Forsyth, from Battle Flatts Veterinary clinic. This was organised by Mrs Lockitt a teaching assistant who also brought her rabbit to school for the day. Children enjoyed writing stories and poems about their favourite animals and pets and were excited to show these off by entering the competition.

Mellissa came Nationally first and was the overall winner. She wins a day out with TV vet, Matt Brash, who judged the competition, three months of free pet food, and a number of other things including rabbit books and a DVD about rabbits.

Nicole, was second in her age group, and won a wonderful bunny toy, books, DVD and two months free pet food.

The girls are having their prizes presented by a representative of Burgess Supafeeds and Mrs Lockitt will be bringing Rooney the Rabbit again!

-------------------------

This is what we wrote before the event ..................

As part of our literacy work in writing for a purpose we are supporting and entering
" National Rabbit Week"

We have made a display in the Library and put up the competition poster.
We also had a vet visit who told us about how to care for pets.

The wonderful things they have created are on display in the hall.

Music Concert - 22nd February 2007

Lots of parents and friends came to our musical evening organised by Mrs Illing. The choir sang a selection of songs with the theme of transport. A particular favourite was "Messing about on the River". Next there was an Ocarina group whose rendition of the Can-Can was superb!

Many of the children in Year 5 who have just begun learning the Trumpet in a class lesson showed what they could do. There was an exciting number where the audience joined in with a rhythm section.

Finally our more advanced Trumpeters joined Mr Vaugan playing the theme from The Lion King. All the children in the beginners group were inspired to play like Ghibson, Rose and Jessica.

Thanks to Mrs Illing, Mrs Morse, Mrs Tyler, Mrs Perrin, Mrs Moreley, Mrs Coombs and most of all the talented children for putting on this evening.

A Mother House for Tubakunde Rwanda.

The ladies who act Bible stories to KS1 on Thursdays have been telling us about one of our friends, Margaret, who has gone out to help set up a house for abandoned, orphaned and sick babies and children of Rwanda. We hear an update of how the work is going and we are very interested in the project. Our children feel very sorry for children who have nothing and it makes them appreciate what they have. We have said prayers for the children in Rwanda and we look forward to hearing from Margaret and doing anything we can to help.

The pictures show children in Rwanda wearing new play clothes made using money which was donated to the project.

Florence Nightingale
visits
Key Stage One Classes at Clifton Green

HB1 tells the story

Why is Florence Nightingale famous?

An actress dressed up as Florence Nightingale to tell us the story of why Florence Nightingale is famous.  Everyone in the class travelled back in time to Victorian times.

She told us what it was like to be a rich Victorian girl.  Chloe dressed up in the same sort of clothes Florence wore when she was a little girl.  Miss Nightingale showed us how to curtsey and bow like Victorian children.

We found out that Florence really liked doing sums even though her mother didn’t want her to be brainy.  Her father was very pleased she was so clever.  Florence decided she wanted to be a nurse.

Her mother was shocked.  Most nurses were dirty and horrible.  Abbie dressed up as Miss Snivel to show us how disgusting and lazy bad nurses were.  Florence wanted to be a different kind of nurse so she went to a good hospital and trained properly.

Miss Nightingale read about a war between Russia and Britain.  It was called the Crimean War.  A reporter called William Russell wrote that the soldiers were hungry, cold and sick and that the hospitals were terrible.

It was so bad that most of the soldiers who went to hospital died instead of getting better.  Florence Nightingale was asked to take some nurses with her to help.

Florence Nightingale and her nurses had work to do.  They cleaned everything.

They washed the hospital , they washed the soldiers.  They got rid of the rats and beetles.

They gave the soldiers clean clothing and bandages. The soldiers started to get better.

We met a nurse from Jamaica who was out in the Crimea at the same time as Florence Nightingale.  Her name was Mary Seacole.  She was very brave and helped soldiers out in the battlefield.

Florence Nightingale liked to check that everything was in order.  Each evening she walked round the hospital carrying a lamp.  The soldiers called her the lady with the lamp.

Children in Need Friday 17th November 2006

At Clifton Green Primary School we celebrated Children in Need by having a non-uniform day to raise money. It cost 50p

and you could wear Red, Yellow or White. The school looked very colourful.  We also held a competition for teachers. They had to pay one pound so they could choose a silver box and write their name under it. When the boxes were all filled in we scraped off the silver and the person with Pudsey bear on his big day won a wooden spoon with Pudsey on the handle.  The winner was Mrs Bean.

For more information about Children in Need CLICK HERE.

Every single penny we raised will be used to help disadvantaged children.

Skipping Workshops Visit

Skipping workshop were invited to school to give a demonstration of skipping skills.  The initial workshop was with a group of Year 5 children who then presented a ‘show’ for the entire school.

The demonstration aimed to encourage children to skip for health, fun and fitness and to highlight a variety of different skills for both individual and group skipping activities.

It is now hoped that skipping craze will sweep the school with everyone at break times becoming healthier and fitter, working towards making Clifton Green one of the healthiest schools in York.

Harvest Festival 2006

Our celebration of the Harvest was held week ending 13th October and enjoyed by all.

HARVEST FESTIVAL

Written by: Nicole Bullivant  R6

Have you ever been to a Harvest Festival?  This year, on Friday 13th October at Clifton Green Primary School, the Harvest Festival took place.  Here are some details about the morning performances.

The day before, children and their parents had brought in produce for the Harvest display, which goes to the Senior Citizens in the afternoon.  The food display looked artistic and creative when it was finished.  It looked as bright and colourful as an exotic bird.  In the middle of the display was the Harvest Sheaf.

On the day of the performances, parents came and sat in the hall, to watch their children sing a song, recite a poem or, in our case, do a mini-play.  We did a Biblical story for our performance, the Feeding of the Five Thousand.  I read out the story and everyone else acted.  One other performance I liked was Y3’s mostly because they all read out clearly and had some fantastic pictures to go with their performance.

Our story was last, so after we had finished a few Y6’s passed out bits of bread while we sang ‘Sharing Bread.’  Some of the hymns we sang were ‘Lord of the Harvest’, ‘ Water of Life’ and ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’.  That was my favourite!  We said a prayer.

In conclusion I think the Harvest Festival went well.  Do you?  If you were there, did you enjoy our performance?  (I know I did!)

EXTENDED SCHOOL CLUBS AT CLIFTON GREEN

( 01904 627270)

7 September 2006

Dear Parent

You may be interested to know that two additional Child Care Clubs are being provided at the school this year: the Breakfast Club and An After School Club.

Breakfast Club – 0.80 – 8.45 am daily in the school’s dining room for children aged between 5 to 11 years. The children are given a choice of cereals, yoghurt, toast with healthy toppings and a drink. During the winter months, we are hoping to provide a warm breakfast as an option. After breakfast, the children read, draw or play board games.

Two adults supervise the children and the younger ones are escorted to their classrooms at 8.45am.

The cost of the breakfast is £1 paid on a daily basis. This is to pay for staff costs and breakfast ingredients. The Club is non-profit making.

If you would like your child to join the club then please sign and return the slip below.

After School Club – 3.20 – 6.00pm daily for children aged 8 to 11 years in the Kingswater Centre.

This new club is offering child care facilities which is being organised and run by the school. It is also non-profit making. Three staff have been appointed to the run Club: an Extended School’s Co-ordinator and two play workers. At 3.20pm, the children will be escorted from school to the Centre and use the excellent facilities there.

The children will do a range of organised activities and will be given a snack.

The cost of this child care is £4.00 daily. If your child is already a member of an existing school club, the play workers can collect your child after the session to take them to the After School Club. Children attending from 4.15pm will be charged £3.00 each day. The payment can be made daily or weekly. Cheques must have the debit card number on the back and the cheques to be made payable to Clifton Green Primary School, York.

The Neighbourhood Nursery provides excellent daily Child Care for all children under the age of 8 years.

I know from previous questionnaires sent to parents that it is their wish the school provides before and after school care for the children. I hope you will make use of these Clubs and find they meet with your requirements.

If interested please sign and return the slip to school so that we can contact you.

Kind regards

S Audsley Headteacher.

Celebration assembly starts .

This morning we had a celebration assembly as we have renewed our Gold Artsmark for commitment to the Arts. One of our governors, Mr. David Scott, came to present the certificate from the Arts Council. We looked at all the things we were involved in that earned us the outstanding status. For each group that contributed one child representing the group held up a flag and balloon. The hall was filled with balloons! Get Your Kit On

Clifton Green School are celebrating thanks to The Football Foundation, the UKs largest sports charity.

The foundation has provided the teams at school with new Nike kit worth £400 as part of its Junior Kit Scheme, providing strips and equipment to teams accross the country.

Our "A" Team

Our "B" Team

Over 8,000 kits have already been provided by the Foundation to junior clubs and schools ensuring young players of all abilities have the best possible start in the game.

Funded by the FA Premier League, the Football Association, Sport England and the Government, the Football Foundation is dedicated to revitalising the grass roots of the game, constructing modern football facilities, developing football as a force for social cohesion and as a vehicle for education in communities.

Mr Murray, teacher and football manager, and the children in the teams thanked the Foundation....
" The Kit is a huge boost for our teams and they look great. There is some way to go before we reach the Premier League but we certainly look the part" said Mr Murray.

In 24 hours?
It can be done!

Try a challenge with a difference — get together a team of 4–6 people and commit your team to raising at least £1600.

Miss Holdsworth, Mr Murray and Mr White are part of a team called Tempus Fugit taking part in the Three Peaks Challenge in aid of action medical research. This is our school's charity for the Summer term. We are pledging our support for this very worthwhile cause because, in addition to it's worthy aims, it fits so well with our school's policy as a healthy school.

The history of this charity is interesting :-
Action Medical Research was born out of the concern of a father for his daughter. In 1949 18-month-old Janet Guthrie was diagnosed with polio. Her father, Duncan, was so distressed by Janet’s illness, and appalled by the lack of knowledge about what was a disease of epidemic proportions, that he used the 7s 6d kept in a tobacco tin under the bed to set up a new charity. In 1952 the National Fund for Poliomyelitis Research was established.

(Children might be surprised to know that it was polio that Mrs Calverley's brother had at the same time as Janet. It was this disease that left him unable to walk and why he still uses a wheelchair. )

And how can the pupils become involved in our efforts towards this great cause ........

Action Research for the Crippled Child

Children are invited to take part in a sponsored walk - which will be round the school field - in aid of Action Medical Research on Friday 9th June.
Laps are about 500metres!
Sponsorship forms for the event will be given out during the week beginning 22nd May.
We are encouraging children to take part, not only for the worthy cause, but also because it links in well with the Healthy Schools Campaign.

Click here to see how it went.....

Sure enough, research funded by the charity led to the development of the polio vaccine, paving the way for virtual eradication of the disease world-wide. The charity went from strength to strength as Action Research for the Crippled Child, with achievements such as the development of pioneering hip replacement surgery, the testing of the first rubella vaccine, discovering the importance of folic acid in the prevention of spina bifida, and many other breakthroughs in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, problems with pregnancy and premature babies, to name but a few.

In 2003 the charity’s name became Action Medical Research, and with its new name comes a renewed determination to keep working to improve the health and quality of life of everyone. Polio is now a thing of the past in Britain — with your help, many more debilitating diseases can be consigned to history.

What does it do now :-

Action Medical Research is unique. Other medical charities have a single focus — either on a particular disease, or age group, or a specific hospital. Action Medical Research is looking for answers to a wide range of diseases and conditions that affect young and old. They have the broadest research remit of any medical charity which relies on voluntary support. Action Medical Research is creating a healthier future for everyone, and they do this by selecting the best research projects in areas where we are most likely to find cures or treatments. Their work is driven by medical need, and is independent of political or commercial influence.

The charity is currently looking for answers to premature birth, sickle cell disease, cerebral palsy, stroke, epilepsy, osteoporosis and a whole range of other diseases and conditions.

Read about it http://www.action.org.uk/

Paddington Bear is the mascot of Action Medical Research, his relationship is mentioned on their site and the teachers are taking him with them .Children can visit

http://www.paddingtonbear.co.uk/

Events planned to support the teachers taking on the challenge will be announced throughout the term. Any children or families with ideas of how we could help should see Mrs Calverley.

Can we help you ?.....

Clifton Green School Library

Does your library promote literacy and inspire reading?

Many schools had asked to see what we had done with our library and how it impacts on reading standards. I had shown some people round individually but  decided after Ofsted mentioned our excellent library to run a training session. Twelve schools came to this.

We showed teachers and teaching assistants of infant, junior, primary schools how we set up and run our library. We showed them how to do a self –evaluation of an existing library and develop an action plan for improvement. A representative from Junior Librarian , the automated system we use, was there to demonstrate the system. She interested schools that hadn’t got the software, but also showed schools that had how to get the best out of it.

If any school still has questions I am happy to advise on stocking and managing the books and the pupil and staff use of the system.

Jean Calverley – Deputy Head (and Literacy Leader) Clifton Green Primary School www.cliftongreenprimary@york.gov.uk

OUTCOME ...........

12 schools attended. The event was deemed a tremendous success. A case study of our school is now on the Junior Librarian website.

York Drama Festival

We took part in the York Schools Drama Festival. About 20 schools from around the City took part, each performing a short piece on the theme "You and Me"
Twenty Year 2 children took part and performed a choral speaking piece called "What If" They did extremely well as they were the youngest performers.
Lots of parents and families came to watch and ours must have been the best as it got the loudest applause. Miss Holdsworth directed our performance which was written by her with help from Year 5 children. Mrs Audsley, Mrs Calverley, Mrs Perrin and Mrs Morley who went to the Festival were very proud of our children.

Valentine's Day

The Valentine Appeal
It was Non Uniform day on
Tuesday 14th February
This event went very well and we have a report written by Grace Metheringham a pupil in Year 4 who is the School Council Secretary.......

Valentine Appeal 14th February 2006

On Tuesday 14th February we had a Give and Get sale for the British Heart Foundation.  We also had a Wear Red to Show You Care day.  We held the fund raising events on Valentine’s Day because of the red heart for the British Heart Foundation.

Most children in the school donated fifty pence or more to pay for wearing non-uniform.  Non-uniform raised one hundred and fifty eight pounds.

The Give and Get sale was a success.  The stalls were run by the School Council.  It raised sixty pounds.

There was also a donation of twenty pounds from a parent.  So altogether we raised two hundred and thirty eight pounds.

THANKYOU EVERYONE!

By Grace Metheringham, Year Four, School Council Secretary

Thank you Grace ..........................

This event was particularly poignant for us as a popular Year 4 pupil, Philip Malinga, has been absent from Mr Murray's class this term after undergoing major heart surgery at Leeds General Infirmary on January 4th.

His teaching assistant Mrs Morley has visited Philip and kept us all up to date on his progress.

You will remember we sent a message of "Happy Birthday" to Philip for his birthday on 28th February.

Latest news about Philip........... (17th March)

He has now had the heart operation and is feeling much better and he is home and has started coming into school 3 mornings a week.

Everyone is very pleased to see him back and so well.

Mrs Morley, says he hasn't lost any of his skills and in fact he has won his classes' star writer for writing his name. He had only just mastered this when he went into hospital so everyone is delighted he can still do it!

Well done Philip.

FIRE OF LONDON

Recently three Year 1/2 Classes had a visit from Lady Lucy (a lady from Old London town in 1666) who took them back to The Great Fire of London.

Below is a lovely piece of work by Sydney Super telling us all about the visit.

Included are some pictures of the event.

Sydney Super                              18th January 2005

A Visit from Lady Lucy

On Monday Lady Lucy came to talk to our class about the Great Fire of London. She was an actress who came dressed in period costume and showed us how it was in 1666.

First we went to the Kingswater centre where she had a lot of props laid out. Next she greeted everyone and gave some people names.

Aaron was Mr Pepys and Jessica was Mrs Pepys. Aaron had a super costume with a red velvet jacket and a big black hat with a feather. Then she told us Mr Pepys had written a diary that told us all about how the fire happened.

Next she took us to Pudding Lane. We all had something to do there. I was a child running round with a hobby horse. There was lots of noise and bustle and people selling things. The oyster girl, who was Grace, had to shout “Buy my lovely oysters!” and some people shouted, “Buy my stinky fish!”

After that Lady Sarah picked Jamie to be the baker and told us how he had left the ovens alight, which started the fire.

Finally we looked at how squashed the houses had been and how fire would have spread. They had timber buildings with thatched rooves. It was very interesting.

I enjoyed learning about the Great Fire of London and think it was much more fun than reading a book or watching a video!

NEW YEAR

Fitting in with the New Year, Mrs Audsley led a first day back assembly where she talked about New Year resolutions. She talked about them in relation to our Ofsted report and told the children one of the resolutions all the staff had made was to try and help children get better at writing.
She then showed them a little acrostic poem she had written .....

Now is the time to do your best

Everyone to work together

Writing is going to be tops!

Soon after the completion of this survey, the school was inspected by OFSTED. Their investigations revealed that “The personal development and well-being of pupils are good. Pupils feel safe and confident. A typical comment is 'it is colourful and a good place to learn'. …..The provision for pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is good. Pupils respect one another's feelings and cultures, which contributes well to the good relationships within the school. The pupils respond positively to the high expectations that the staff hold for good behaviour……They are proud to be members of the school council and their opinions are listened to, taken into account and acted upon. …The school takes good care of all its pupils. The school has outstanding provision to ensure that pupils, particularly those who are vulnerable overcome social and emotional barriers to learning.”

The excellent OFSTED report (Nov 05) has given the school an assurance that it is offering a good education for the pupils. However, I am mindful that some of the responses from the Local Authority Survey expressed some concerns - see Q3, Q4, Q6, Q12, Q14, and Q18. Knowing these, however, the school will aim to make further improvements in these areas. At the same time, I am asking for your help in that any concern is made known to me, my staff, or through the Parent’s Forum so that issues can be addressed and rectified straightaway.

Thank you to all those parents who completed this survey.

St Nicholas Fair

And we had a St Nicholas Fair at school today where we had a special visitor.

........... Santa Claus himself, !!!!!

helped by a Christmas Fairy and an Elf visited us for  the afternoon and met many of our younger children.

The parents had made him a super grotto to have a private chat with children so they could discuss their behaviour and the presents they would like.

Santa told us he was very impressed by our thoughtful, well behaved children and hoped to make as many as possible of their wishes come true.

Parents and friends had the opportunity to buy items made by children and enter games and raffles. It was a lovely , festive occasion enjoyed by all.

Enjoy the pictures.........

Susan Keech
(nee Dunn)

Sadly we heard this week of the death of Susan Keech,  aged 59,  a former teacher who taught at Shipton Street Primary and then Kingsway junior for 33 years. She retired due to ill health six years ago but will be sadly missed by colleagues and friends at the school.
Many children in the area will remember Miss Dunn (or Mrs Keech) and her contribution to their education. School trips to Belgium and fancy dress competitions were highlights from her Kingsway career.
We send our sympathy to her husband Alan. She will be long remembered for her sense of humour and her kind and generous spirit.
Clifton Green was represented at her funeral on Wednesday at St Olave's church Marygate by former colleagues Mrs Calverley and Mr Reed who taught with her at Kingsway Junior School.

Bible Stories

In KS1 we are lucky to have the ladies from York Youth Trust (Yo Yo ) telling us Bible stories in assemblies on Thursdays.

Here are some pictures from this week's assembly. They told the story of Jacob, who had tricked Esau, and was now tricked himself. He had to marry Leah before he could marry Rachael.

Poppy Day

This morning (11th November) in assembly Mrs Audsley told the children about the British Legion and the Poppy appeal.

They heard about the World Wars and how they affected generations of young men. The children were shown a class photo from Edwardian times and it was pointed out that all the boys in the photo were killed as young men in the first World War.

Mrs Audsley told them about Anne Franks and how the Jews that were persecuted. She explained simply to the children that many young men gave their lives to stop such evil.

At 11'oclock the whole school had 2 minutes silence to remember them.

Harvest Festival
   PHOTO SPECIAL

We held a Harvest Service on Friday 14th October 2005 with contributions from all classes - songs, poems etc

Parents were invited and the service was a tremendous success with a lovely display of harvest produce sent in by parents and the contributions by the children.
We shared the Harvest Bread and the theme of this years service was sharing.

In the afternoon senior citizens from the community were invited into school to see the children's contributions and have tea, scones, jam and cream.
They all received a food parcel (from the morning's contributions) to take home.
We sent out 60 parcels this year.

Mr Reed and Mr Binns made lovely waitresses !!!

A collection was taken from those attending the festival in aid of 3 charities.
* Earthquake victims in Pakistan and Kashmir, India
* Malawi- Famine Relief (we have a pupil originally from Malawi)
* The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign
(Mr Hugill, who is one of our parents has been working
with this cause)

for news about the Nestle Prize and much more.

UPDATE - 21st OCTOBER

We have had a letter from Nestle thanking us for our efforts but saying that, although the judges were very impressed, we weren't successful in being chosen as judges but we are all to get a bookmark to say thank you.
Mrs Calverley was very impressed that so many classes had a go and the school library will buy each class a copy of the short listed books in their category so that they can make their own choices and we'll see if Nestle Judges agree with us

We will then publish our results here on this page.

Retirement of a much loved nursery teacher.

At the end of last term (Summer 2005) Mrs Sheila Grimes retired from teaching after 28 years, 22 of them at Shipton Street/Clifton Green school.

She has taught approximately 840 children from our community as Mrs Audsley commented in her farewell speech.  Mrs Audsley also calculated she had walked in and out of school 11,200 times and back and forth from the staffroom 44800 times!

She laughingly stopped there, and went on to mention many highlights of Mrs Grimes’ carreer. Staff praised her lovely manner with the children and said how they would miss her beautiful singing voice. It was also commented how lucky she had been, in her job, to be married to Father Christmas.

Many people are going to miss Sheila and there were several farewell occasions, in school and out, and staff and children gave her presents. The photo shows her, with Mrs Audsley, cutting a lovely “Poppy” cake made for her by Mrs Bewley. We all know Mrs Grimes’ loves poppies
