Dear Parent

40th Anniversary
1970 – 2010

40th Birthday celebrations
for at least 17000 pupils
who have attended the schools
over the past 40 years!

Clifton Green Primary School, formerly known as Kingsway Junior School, is having a birthday celebration this week in recognition of there being a school on the site for 40 years. As part of our celebrations the children are studying a particular decade over the 40 years so they have a chance to learn about news at the time and important events that happened. On Thursday, we are having a special assembly so each class can share their learning experiences with the other classes. This will be followed in the afternoon by a birthday party to celebrate the number of pupils that have attended the school over the past 40 years.

Parents are invited to the morning Assembly this Thursday at 9.00am.

During any time of the day on FRIDAY 2 JULY any former pupils or staff

are more than welcome to visit and tour the school

and chat with the children about their school experiences

and the careers they chose when they left school.

OFSTED Outstanding English 2010

2 March 2010

Dear Parents

I wish to inform you that I have decided to retire at the end of this academic year. Although being the Headteacher has demanded much hard work, it has been one of the most fulfilling times in my career.

However, I know that the success of the school has not been achieved through my efforts alone but through a very effective, collaborative relationship with you, the governors, and a very committed staff.

Our vision that children matter and children come first has established a culture where everything is made possible to help the children achieve to their full potential. As a result, Clifton Green is a well respected school and, indeed, is recognised as one of the most effective schools in York and in the country.

You may ask why leave at this successful time? I leave with an assurance that there are very good systems in place to sustain high standards for the children and, with the right appointment, the school will continue to thrive, develop and respond personally to the needs of the children and the community it serves.

I feel humbled and so very honoured to have given the children in Clifton the chance to develop their aspirations and their love of learning which, it is hoped, will increase their life chances in the future.

The Chair, Mrs Comer, and the Governing Body are presently making arrangements to advertise the post and to hold interviews towards the end of April. You will be informed when the appointment has been made.

Parents’ Forum met Friday 12 February 2010

Parent’s Forum is a good opportunity for you to have your say.

At the last meeting the following items were discussed:-

Qu – 1, What are the rules governing when a child is allowed out of school on their own without handing them to a parent? What is the official school policy?

Response: - There isn't any law about what age a child can walk to and from school on their own. The school recommends children up to the age of 7 to be collected by a member of the family or by a relative, carer or friend of the family. If there are any safeguarding concerns about a child then Children's Services should be contacted. 01904 551900.

Qu 2 – Concern about child welfare in the home?

Issues raised: What should friends and neighbours do if they suspect or know of abuse? Parents asked to raise awareness of contact numbers, posters to be displayed around school and in local medical surgeries.

Response: - Safeguarding of children is the responsibility of everyone in the community. School follows very clear rules regarding the safeguarding of its pupils. This includes CRB checks of staff, volunteers and regular visitors. In January, the teaching and support staff underwent child protection training. If any parent suspects there is abuse in a home then please report concerns to school or Children and Family Services tel: (01904) 551900. Outside office hours, at weekends and on public holidays contact the emergency duty team tel: (0845) 0349417. Alternatively, write/call in: Referral and Assessment Team, Ashbank, 1 Shipton Road, York, YO30 5RE (Monday to Friday from 8.30am - 5.00pm).

Qu 3 – In the light of the school’s excellent OFSTED report how can we highlight the need to read at home. What happened to our Reading Club? How can we make everyone aware that reading is important for the child’s future?

Response – The school regularly promotes the importance of reading. We have a superb library to endorse reading matters. However, we know that some children do not read as often at home as we would like. We will talk to the parent about our concern and usually we plan how we can help the family. At the moment, we have a small group of children who come for early morning reading and they are helped by some older pupils who are the school’s Learning Mentors. We also have numerous volunteers who help with individual reading through the week. We have stickers, visiting authors and run competitions to promote reading. This Thursday, for example, we are celebrating World Book Day and we are paying for an author to visit the school to talk about her books.  Our Reading Club is now called Library Club and club members meet every Wednesday. Reading is a strength of the school but I agree with the parents who raised this, we must keep promoting the importance of reading at home. Thanks.

Qu 4 – The role of the Staff Parent Association?

Response: - It is agreed that the SPA is not a legal body but an informal group of willing volunteers who give their time to meet and plan fund raising activities. The school is a member of The National Confederation of Parent Teacher Associations (NCPTA) which is a national charity. The school has elected to be a member of this charity to keep up to date on news and to have chance to access grants.

Qu 5 – I have heard that arts funding in schools has been cut by the Council. Will this effect the activities our children get to do, and how?

Response:– The school promotes the Arts. We have a Gold Arts Award from the Arts Council. We were saddened to hear about the cuts, as were other schools in York, so the Headteachers voiced their concerns. In response, the Council are continuing with the scheme until the end of 2011 but the schools have to pay a fee to keep the service running. Clifton Green has agreed to do this. The Council will decide how they propose to run the service from 1 April 2011.

I received a letter about the need for all pupils being treated equally and fairly. I was disappointed to

receive this letter. The school works hard to ensure equality of opportunity for all pupils. We teach pupils about world wide diversity of society and cultures beyond their local community, and develop their understanding of their place in it. We encourage self respect, positive self-images, and attitude towards issues of gender, race, disability and disadvantage. We teach the children to recognize and avoid stereotyping. We do not run a two tier system, as the letter stated, but respond very personally to the needs of each individual child, recognising that at times some of our children need more pastoral support than others. It is a pity that the parent had to write this concern but I hope this has explained the school’s position sufficiently for the parent to feel satisfied. Please, if there remains a concern, then perhaps the parent can meet me with me to talk about it. Thank you.

28 January 2010

Dear Parent

The School, with the help of the Staff/Parent Association (SPA), is arranging a Games Night for families next week, THURSDAY 4 February from 6.00 – 7.00pm.

The evening should be fun for you and your family. We will be playing Bingo, running a Beetle Drive and testing our brain power with a Quiz. Refreshments will be available.

We need prizes for the games, so if you have anything suitable, could you please send them to the School Office. Perhaps you may have some very nice unwanted Christmas presents, which can be donated for this evening? We do hope you are able to support this social event. Entry fee is 50p per family.

Dates of other events

Non uniform day Friday 5 February.

This is to support “Day for a Change” to raise funds for UNICEF’s work to help children in parts of the world to achieve their right to health and well-being.

In 2010, we are going to help improve children’s health and education in Mozambique (South East Africa) by taking part in Day for Change.

“Every day in Mozambique, about 400 children under the age five die, mainly of preventable causes. One in two children lack safe drinking water and around one in three girls do not get the chance to attend primary school. UNICEF is changing children’s lives in Mozambique, but we need your help to do more.”

A donation of 50p for taking part in the event.

Parents’ Forum met Friday– 23 October 2009.

Parent’s Forum is a good opportunity for you to have your say.

At the last meeting the following items were discussed:-

Qu 1 - Some items of clothing belonging to the older pupils have gone missing.

Response: - Please could parents check the labels in their children’s clothing and return any that do not belong to the family. Thanks.

Qu 2 – Do school meals represent good value and are the menus followed?

Response: - School meals represent very good value for money. They are all carefully planned by nutritionists to ensure the children receive a balanced meal. The menus are followed but an additional choice is usually provided for those children who do not like what is offer that day.

Qu 3 – Homework – not enough time is given to complete homework.

Response – The issue was raised about one particular class. The teachers have discussed the arrangements and the children will be given enough time to complete their homework.

Qu 4 – The website – some class pages have lots on, others very little.

This is in hand.

Qu 5 – Language – please could there be reminders about inappropriate language being used?

Response – I am disappointed that some children continue to do this because we are always reminding them about using appropriate language. We will talk to the children again and monitor. Please, if any parent hears children swearing could they let the teachers know straightaway? This even applies when they have left the school site and are on their way home. Please, if the adults too can use the correct language particularly when children can hear adults speaking. Thanks.

Qu 6 – Time given for the children to eat their lunch. Some don’t seem to be getting enough time to finish.

We never rush the children to eat their food. For those children who have a late dinner, we may suggest they chat less and eat more. They should know that we never expect them to hurry their food but I will mention this in a school assembly.

Qu 8 – Could events such as Harvest start nearer to the beginning of the school day. The gap is very awkward.

Response – Yes, we can start our special assemblies at 9.15. Please note, though, the Carol Service will start at 9.30 because of the time it takes to get the whole school to the Church on that day.

Qu 9 – Please could the KS1 Good Work Assembly be put in the Newsletter as some parents don’t know about it?

Response – Yes

Qu 10 – Could SPA meetings not be booked during Good Work Assembly?

Response – The next SPA meeting is already arranged for this Friday at 9.00am.  Future meetings will be booked at other times.

Qu 11 – At the Christmas Parties, if there are drinks, please could water be one of the options?

Response - Yes

Message for those families who drive onto the school site. The Manager of the Children’s Centre has requested that the children do not run across the Centre’s staff car park.

Response – I am very concerned that parents are using the car park to drop off or collect their child/children. I have seen very young children run between the cars. Given the wintry weather and dark mornings and nights, this is even more dangerous. We do not want a serious accident or fatalities so, again please, avoid using the car park and keep to the children’s pathways which are safe. Please if we could all be vigilant for the safety of the children. Thanks.

Please no-one should use the driveway, which is only for vehicles entering/ leaving the site. Thanks.

Children’s Pathways are: From Crombie Avenue or Kingsway North – side gate near the Children’s Centre. From Kingsway North or Water Lane to the play ground – side gate on public footpath which runs by the Health Centre. From Lumley Road – gate onto playground or pathway around the building.

21 October 2009

Dear Parent

Thank you very much for all the lovely produce you sent for the Harvest Festival last week. Your generosity was overwhelming! We had a lovely Harvest Festival in which every child was invited to take part. During the afternoon, 60 pensioners enjoyed their afternoon tea of scones, cream and jam and took home very substantial food parcels.

Walk to School Week - Monday 12 October to Thursday 15 October......................................Walk to School Week - Monday 12 October to Thursday 15 October..........................................

The school came third in the Walk to School Week Competition, which was organised by CYC and sponsored by Jack Archer, President of Age Concern. The Winner was Copmanthorpe School with 97% walking to school. Our walking totalled 91.5%.
A very big thank you to everyone for supporting this worthwhile event.

Car Parking

Please, may I remind you that the car park is for the Children’s Centre use, drivers with disability badges and taxis dropping off and collecting. The large car park belongs to the Children’s Centre staff and they have difficulty parking because some Clifton Green families are taking up parking spaces. Thank you. A big thanks to those families who do not park on the site.

School Attendance

School Attendance has been satisfactory this term but we have had quite a number of families taking their Annual Holidays during school time which, as you know, is very much discouraged by the Department for Education.

We are trying to keep our attendance rate to national average which is 95%. We know that if children are absent a lot then it will have a detrimental effect on their learning.

It is really important that your child avoids being absent but, understandably, children can come down with more illnesses than adults. A huge thank you to those families who ensure their child’s attendance to school is good.

Please telephone school if your child is going to be absent that day.

Telephone Attendance Hotline

Answer machine dedicated to receiving messages is 01904 627059.

Did you know 95% attendance means your child has been absent for 8 school days……

90% means your child has missed 3 school weeks…… 87% -  4 school weeks of absence?

It has been brought to my notice the following:-

§         Parents smoking on the school site. The school site is a NON SMOKING AREA. This includes parents sitting in their cars.

§         Older children cycling around the footpaths. There are signs that request cyclists dismount when they enter the site. If you have an older child who picks up their younger brother/sister and uses a cycle please bring this notice to their attention.

  • Older children and some parents swearing on the school site.
This is unacceptable language in a school environment where the teachers encourage the children to use good modes of speech.

Dear Parent

Thank you for visiting the school next week to meet your child’s class teacher.

I hope the meeting will enable you to know how the teachers and support staff are helping your child to learn and succeed better with their work.

I am certain that if school and home can work together well we can be assured the very best for all the children and we will have another happy and successful year.

The school photographer is working in school next Monday 5 October (from 8.45 am).

In a couple of weeks, you will receive a small proof photograph, which will enable you to make a choice of the photos of your choice.

If you do not wish your child/children to have their photograph taken, please inform the school office.

WELCOME TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE JOINED OUR SCHOOL

Dear Parent

Last week, it was really lovely to see all the children, smartly dressed in their school uniform and new shoes, arrive back ready for the start of the new school year. They settled very quickly into their new classrooms, and concentrated extremely well on their learning. I am sure they had lots of stories to tell you when they arrived home!

Over the summer holidays, the school made preparations for the children’s return. The school nursery was decorated and the dining room was smartened up. New carpets have been fitted in the Nursery and the entrance hall, meeting rooms and offices. The other carpets were cleaned and high level cleaning took place around the school. Mr Pallister, the caretaker and the grounds staff tidied the school grounds.

A new school year means a new start, and this year, with your fantastic help, we will continue to make Clifton Green one of the best schools in York.

To keep you informed of what is happening in school; I will be sending you regular Newsletters, which will detail special events and activities. However, please feel free to contact school if you have any queries or concerns regarding your child.

14th July 2009

Dear Parent

I am sure you will agree that it has been a really fantastic year for us all!

Looking back this is what we have achieved:-

·         An Outstanding Grade from OFSTED IN January.

·         Awarded another Gold Arts Mark from the Arts Council in recognition of outstanding commitment the school provides for teaching the arts.

·         Our highly entertaining POP Connections concert at the Church for the KS2 pupils, culminating in the children producing a CD of all the songs from the concert.

  • Y2, Y3 and Y6 children entering the YOSCARS. The Yoscars (York Oscars) are to ICT in our schools and are open to budding young film-makers aged between three and 16 years of age from schools across the city. The Y3 children were amongst the finalists for their short digital animation film and were invited to a glitzy 'Oscar'-style event at York Racecourse. Much to the surprise of the children, to  mark the occasion, we hired a huge stretched white limousine. They had even more surprises when the panel of independent judges announced that Clifton Green were the winners in the Y3/Y4 category! The whole school celebrated the wonderful success of these young seven year olds!

·         Our end of Key Stage 2 results for the Y6 pupils are amongst the best in York! Congratulations Y6 pupils!

·         Excellent achievements from many children across the school. Well done children!

·         Well done Y6 for their end of year production Pirates Adventure – fantastic, thrilling and hilarious!

Now we are keeping our fingers crossed that every child in Y6 will be awarded a personal Arts Award from Trinity Guildhall, London, for their individual Project work they have been doing this summer term.

End of term arrangements

We have planned quite a few happy end of term arrangements which are:-

We are having a special leaving service for the Y6 children who will be moving on to secondary school in September. It will be in the school hall, on the last day of the term – Friday 17 July at 9.30am, to which everyone is invited to attend.

At the end of this term Mrs Bilton is leaving to take up a post in another York School. Everyone wishes Mrs Bilton the very best of luck for the future and our grateful thanks for the excellent work she has undertaken over the past twelve months at the school.

During the school holidays Ms Neads is getting married. Good luck Ms Neads!

The New School Year –
The first day back for all the children is
Monday 7 September

Please ensure your child wears the correct school uniform to include correct footwear (black/dark shoes or trainers). Some children have been wearing white trainers over the summer which is not the school uniform. Please ensure your child observes this school rule.

The PE uniform is white top, black shorts and black plimsolls.

Thank you for the excellent support

Finally, as the end of term draws to a close may I, on behalf of everyone at the school, thank you all, as well as friends of the school, for the superb help and the support you have given over the past year.

A special thank you to all the teachers, support staff and other staff. It is a very special team of people who strive hard to ensure the children are happy and achieve well in their school environment.

A special thank you to the Governors of the school who so readily volunteer to give their time in helping to make this an effective and very happy school.

A special thank you to the children who work tremendously hard through the year, and make our job so very, very rewarding.

The school has celebrated much success during 2008/09.

Well done the children, well done the teachers and well done everyone!

All good wishes to you and your families this summer.

Thank you for your continued support. It is very much appreciated

Dear Parent

Entry/Exit to school

As from September we intend to improve the entry/exit to school and we would be very pleased if everyone and a good number of you already do, use the correct entry/exits to school.

Nursery and Reception Children please use the pathways that skirt the building and enter the building through the Nursery door. Pick up from the Nursery play area.

Mrs Holmes’ and Mrs Bewley’s class. Please follow the instructions given for the Nursery and Reception children. Pick up at the end of the day from the classroom fire door.

Y2 Mrs Calverley/ Miss Ravalia, Y2 Miss Mould’s and Y1 Mr White’s classes. Please enter from the footpaths that skirt around the building. There is a side door for entry which is outside room 11. Pick up at the end of the day from classroom fire doors.

Miss Holdsworth, Mrs Ryan/Mrs Taylor, Mr Murray’s, Mr Binns and Mr Reed’s classes. Entry from the footpath through the playground. Please line up at the start of the day. Children to leave by their fire doors at the end of the day.

Parents please avoid coming through school unless you have visited the school office or you have younger children in Reception and Y1 and you need to come through the hall to the other side of school. Please avoid, if at all possible, coming through the front door.

Parents with buggies – please leave outside and carry your infant into school or if this is not possible arrive at the classroom fire door. This will avoid jamming up the narrow corridors with buggies.

The car park at the front of school belongs to the Children’s Centre

Please do not use this carpark unless you have a disabled pass or you are arriving by taxi. Please park outside the school grounds (not in the Health Centre as this is for patients only) and use the footpaths to enter school. Chidlren must not walk up the main driveway which is only for vehicles but to be encouraged to use the children’s footpaths. All cyclists to dismount when entering the site if entry is by the children’s footpaths.

Yours sincerely

Sheila Audsley

Summer Fayre

Thank you very much for supporting the Summer Fayre last Friday. Through your generosity of donating cakes and items for the Tombolas and raffles and coming along to the event, we managed to raise a staggering £1164!

A big thank you to all the SPA members for making the Summer Fayre go so smoothly. SPA members went out and about in the community to ask local businesses for raffle and Tombola prizes.

This year, we had some super donations, including two nights accommodation and breakfast for a family of four to Ramada Hotel in York, tickets to see a show at the Grand Opera House, a river boat trip, a day’s pass for family swimming, gift vouchers from local businesses which included salmon for four, a butcher’s meat meal, shampoo and set,  a large basket of fruit from a local green grocer, as well as all the other lovely gifts for the Tombola and cake stall.

If you are interested in becoming a SPA member, please contact a SPA member or there are details about the SPA on the school’s website.

Staff Leaving

Mrs Brenda Marshall has retired as a cleaner for the Kingswater Centre. Previous to that she was a cleaner at Kingsway Junior School for many years. All in all, Mrs Marshall has been a cleaner on the site for nearly thirty years. I have calculated that she has dusted furniture 7,200 times, mopped floors 4320 times, vaccumed carpets 7,200 times so I think she is an expert in the field!  Mrs Marshall’s contribution to Commercial Cleaning Services has been really outstanding and she will be missed for the willing commitment she has given over the time as well as her cheery smile and hearty laughs.

The school wishes Mrs Marshall the very best of luck for the future.

New staff arriving this September

Mrs Woodward has been appointed as an additional part time teacher for the Foundation Stage.

Mrs Martin and Mrs Colquhoun as teaching assistants in KS2.

Good news - GOLD Arts Mark!

The school has received another GOLD AWARD from the Arts Council, England. The award is in recognition of outstanding commitment the school provides for teaching the arts. There are three levels, bronze, silver with gold being the highest award. Sincere thanks to Mrs Calverley who put together the application in November and…

Well done everyone on another wonderful achievement!

Thank you for your continued much appreciated support.

We have a great school!

14 May 2009

Dear Parents

We are asking that you support the school in a Walk to School Week which begins next week, Monday 18 May.  Well over a million pupils in primary schools across the country will be taking part in this important event. The theme this year is 'Walk 'n' Talk' which is aimed at highlighting the social side to walking to school; it can be fun and fascinating

Thank you for your support regarding school attendance. This is a really important time for the school because of the national testing taking place across the country for children in Y2 and Y6 and the other Year Groups undertaking annual tests to determine their progress. The information will help us to know what further help we need to give each child during this final part of the school year.

Thank you also for attending the Meet the Teacher sessions. We hope these meetings were useful and have helped you to know what support you need to give your child to enable them to succeed well with their learning.

Now on with the News

School Photographer – will be visiting the school during the morning of Thursday 21 May to take class and Sport Team photographs. These will be on sale after the half term break.

School Disco – Extended School Event – Arranged for Thursday 21 May.  4.30 to 5.30pm for the Reception, Y1 and Y2 children. 6.00pm to 7.00pm for Y3, Y4 and Y5 children. Entry fee is 50p, which includes free refreshments.

Half term – The school will be closed on Monday 25 May and will reopen on Tuesday 2 June.  (1 June is a planned teachers’ working day).

School Summer Fayre – Friday 19 June.

27th April 2009

Dear Parents

We have planned lots of lovely experiences over the summer term which the children will really enjoy. However, as you know, this is an important time of the school year because the children in Y2 and Y6 will be taking their national tests (just like all the other children in the country). The tests are to see if your child can achieve national standards or above. Equally, the other Year Groups in the school will be assessed to see if they have made good progress. As always, we ask for your support so your child is given the best possible chance to succeed.

Here’s how you can help:-

  • Ensure your child attends school and arrives punctually every day.
  • Avoid taking holiday at this time.
  • Make sure your child completes their homework, and returns it to school on time.
  • Listen to your child read every day.
  • Meet your child’s teacher to discuss the best way of helping your child over this period. Meet the Teacher Week (Reception to Y5) is this week. Please try to make an appointment so that you can discuss with your child’s teacher progress and the best way you can help your child to learn over the next few weeks. In July, you will receive your child’s Annual Report. There will be no meetings with parents at that time, unless you particularly request it. We think this arrangement helps parents to really support the children’s learning during this crucial time of the school year.

Now on with the News

Parents’ Self Help Group – This is a chance for you to become involved with a group of parents who want to share their parenting skills. So often, parents feel they are failing if their child is constantly challenging them. This is not the case. Many children challenge many parents. What are we going to do about it? Well, as a first step, we thought it would be a good idea to invite interested parents to an initial very informal meeting to discuss how we are going to take this self help group forward. Here’s your chance to share your experiences and your skills! Please, if interested, the first meeting is this coming Thursday 30 April at 9.00am.

Parent Governor Elections. Please return your nomination by this coming Thursday. We have two vacancies. Thanks.

Summer Term

KS1 tests start Tuesday 5 May. KS2 tests start week Monday 11 May.

It is very important that your child attends school during the test weeks

School is closed next Monday 4 May for one day only.

The half term holiday is week beginning 25 May. The children return on Tuesday 2 June.

17th March 2009

Dear Parents

Thank you very much for the continued support over the term. It was really good to see so many families attend the celebration party with the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress! The children have done extremely well and everyone rightly feels very proud of the children’s achievements.

Please continue to help in the following ways~

  • Ensuring your child attends school and arrives punctually every day.

  • Ensuring your child comes to school correctly dressed in school uniform.

  • Informing school if your telephone number is changed. If we need to contact you urgently, it is important that we are able to do so. Tel number 627270.

  • Using the footpaths to school and not the driveway. Parking outside of school if you come by car.

  • Making sure your child completes their homework, and returns it to school on time.

News

Thank you very much for supporting World Book Day and Comic Relief. The children really enjoyed dressing up as their favourite characters for World Book Day and arriving to school last Friday as though they had just climbed out of bed!  £214.22 was raised for Comic Relief.

The Drama Club had a great time entering the York Annual Drama Festival the other Saturday. Their play was about Rowntrees in the 1950S. Thanks to Nicolette Hobson who put the whole thing together and thanks to those parents who attended. Well done Drama Club!

The School Choir sang at St Luke’s Church last Saturday to support the Big Brew Breakfast which was held to promote and raise money for Fair Trade. Thanks to Helen Warry, Mary Halliday, Gillian Tyler and Alison Illing and, of course, all our choir members!

Easter Events

Competition on Tuesday 31 March. You are very welcome to view

the eggs on show after 3.15 on the Monday, and watch the

We are really looking forward to welcoming The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, as well as other important visitors and governors, this coming Thursday to join in our celebrations.  On Thursday, the school and the Nursery will close at 3.05pm so that everyone can be ready to welcome the Lord Mayor when he arrives between 3.20 and 3.30pm.

We do hope that as many families as possible are able to come to our party to enable the children to feel very special and rightly proud of their school.

We are keeping our fingers crossed that The Press will come to take photographs of this memorable event.

Car Park – We need to keep the car park as clear as possible on Thursday afternoon so may I ask parents arriving by car to pick up their children to avoid using the car park. This is to enable the VIPs and the Lord Mayor’s Limousine to be able to park on the site. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Please note, the OFSTED Report can be found by following the link on the School Website.

Please also note there are no After School Clubs this Thursday because of the Party.

Dear Parent

A Happy New Year to you all!

Thank you very much for your support during the autumn months. We had a really happy and lovely term and the children achieved good progress in their learning. Please continue to help your child to succeed at school and I am asking please for your continued support this term.

Here are a few reminders of ways to help your child~

Please ensure your child attends school every day. As you know we are trying to improve school attendance. I know there is a lot of illness during the winter months but please if your child cannot attend school then let us know.

We have a dedicated attendance line so you can leave a message to inform school if your child is poorly. TEL 01904 627059.

  • Please ensure your child arrives punctually at school each day. There have been quite a number of children arriving late since the start of the new term.

  • Please inform school if your telephone number is changed. If we need to contact you urgently, it is important that we are able to do so.

  • Please make sure your child completes their homework, and returns it to school on time.

  • Please ensure your child comes to school correctly dressed in school uniform.

  • Please ensure your child uses the correct entry/exit doors to school.

Free school Meals. If you are in receipt of child tax credit/income support then your child is eligible for free school meals. Even if this is the case, and you prefer your child has a packed lunch, we still need to know if your child is eligible as this affects school funding.  Please inform Mrs. Bean by this coming Thursday. Thank you.

Children starting school in September 2009 – 5 year olds. If you have not yet registered your child at the school, please do so. We have to inform the Local Authority of our expected pupil numbers.

Dear Parents      9 January 2009

Thank you very much for the excellent support you gave the school when we had the OFSTED Inspection. Hopefully, we will be receiving the OFSTED Report soon and we will be sending you a copy of it. (It is usually about three weeks after the Inspection).

The OFSTED Inspectors were very pleased with the number of questionnaires returned. The school is not allowed to see the questionnaires but I do know that we had nearly 200 forms returned showing the amount of interest and support you give to your child/children and to the school. Thank you.

Maths Challenge

Mr Reed is organising a fun Maths event this coming Friday. The aim is to develop the children’s interest in Maths and to help them understand that learning Maths is an important life skill. In the past, the children have really enjoyed this fun event!

Friendly Faces Afternoon this Thursday,12 February  2.30pm in the dining room

This is a time for any parents to come together for a cup of tea before picking up their children. We did originally say that second hand uniform would be on sale but we have very few garments and what we have are small sizes. So, if anyone has uniform that their child has grown out of and they are willing to donate it, then we would gratefully receive it.

Dear Parent

We were overwhelmed with the numbers of parents and friends supporting the school concerts last week. The children were excellent and it was lovely to see everyone enjoying themselves. It was indeed special because we were able to use our new lights (costing £6000!) which we have bought through money raised from our school events. Your fantastic support really does enable us to purchase very special items for the school! Thank you!

Thank you also for all the lovely items you so kindly donated for the Christmas Fayre.  We managed to raise just over £965 for the school funds.

The Poppy Appeal also raised £60.17. Thank you very much.

The children have been fantastic this term. Every single child has really tried hard with their learning. Thank you for supporting your child to succeed with their reading and homework. As a special treat, a visiting Pantomime group performed Dick Whittington to the school last Thursday afternoon!

This week, we are busy with Christmas parties. All the food is being provided and paid for through the concert tickets you bought last week. Again, thank you for your very kind generosity to ensure the children have a really good Christmas at the school.

To finish the Christmas season we are having a School Carol Service which is taking place at 9.30 am on Thursday 18 December at Clifton Parish Church. Everyone is very welcome to this special Service. On the same day, Christmas dinner is being served to the children.

Now that the end of term is approaching and we all are ready to welcome Christmas into our homes, may I take the opportunity to express my grateful appreciation for the excellent support you have all given.

May I, on behalf of everyone here at the school, wish you and

your family a very Happy Christmas and all good wishes for the

New Year.

Parents’ Forum met Thursday– 23 October 2008.

Parent’s Forum is a good opportunity for you to have your say.

At the last meeting the following items were discussed:-

Qu – 1, Please could Sports Day be scheduled a few weeks before the end of term so that there are more chances to reschedule?

Issues raised: This was a good question. The wet summer resulted in cancelling KS2 Sports day.

Response: - We will arrange Sports’ Days in June next year to allow enough time for rescheduling if the weather is poor.

Qu 2 – Can the locks on the KS2 boys’ toilets be fixed?

Response: - The KS2 boys’ toilets are presently being refurbished and the work should be completed towards the end of this week.

Qu 3 – Homework – who benefits and why do it? Why don’t some children get it back? At what age are children considered responsible for doing their own homework and why are young children punished for not doing it?

Response – We had a long debate about homework in a Staff meeting last week. We know children benefit by reading at home and doing homework but we agreed the homework must be differentiated to meet individual needs and abilities.  We also agreed that praise is needed for those children who complete their homework. Please, if the parent could inform the teacher on a morning when they come into school that the homework has not be done, then the younger children will not miss their playtimes if they haven’t done it. We do not let the younger children miss their playtime. For the older children, we expect them to take their own responsibility for doing homework. Understandably, sometimes this isn’t always possible but, please, if the parent could let the teacher know.  Please can we stress reading at home is necessary. It is a known fact that children who read at home succeed better with their reading. We will ensure the children receive feedback about their homework. If this doesn’t happen then please mention this to the class teacher. Thanks.

Qu 4 – Could the children in Years 4, 5 and 6 use the changing rooms for PE?

I am instructing the PE and the class teachers to do this.

Qu 5 – Some parents and children have heard children swearing. Request for another clamp down?

Response – I am disappointed that some children continue to do this because we are always reminding them about using appropriate language. We will talk to the children again and monitor. Please, if any parent hears children swearing could they let the teachers know straightaway? This even applies when they have left the school site and are on their way home. Please, if the adults too can use the correct language particularly when children can hear adults speaking. Thanks.

Qu 6 – Could we have a litter bin placed near the exit gate next to the Children’s Centre?

Response – Yes we will arrange for one to be put there.

Qu 8 – New clothes appear to be going missing?

Response – I am disappointed about this. Please ensure all clothing is named. I would like to know directly if new items of clothing are missing. We will remind the children to take more care with their possessions and report anything that goes missing.

Qu 9 – A number of families have requested their child’s photo is taken again.

Response – We are contracting a different photographer for 2009. The Photographer is returning on 13 November to do some retakes.

Qu 10 – Some parents feel there is favouritism in school.

Response – I would be disappointed if this were the case. I know everyone ensures all children are valued, respected and included. In fact, we go out of our way to make sure this happens.

20th October 2008

Thank you very much for your kindness to our senior citizens in our local community.

Walk to School Week Competition

0O00000OOOOoooo     000OOOooo00OO     oooo00OO  00O   I'm Walking to school and ....l o v i n g  i t      !!!!      ooo 00oooOO      00OOOooooo000oo       0000OOOOooooo      ool l l looooo

This year, the school came second in the Walk to School Week Competition, which was organised by CYC and sponsored by Jack Archer, President of Age Concern. The Winner was Copmanthorpe School with 98.9% walking to school. Our walking totaled 94.2%, although Wednesday’s total was 98%! A very big thank you to everyone for supporting this worthwhile event.

Car Parking

Please, if at all possible, could the families who use the car park cease from doing so and choose to park their vehicles outside the school grounds. The large car park at the front belongs to the Children’s Centre staff and they have difficulty parking on a morning because some Clifton Green families are taking up parking spaces.

Parent’s Forum

Parent’s Forum is a good opportunity for you to have your say.

The meeting is this coming Thursday at 2.00pm in the large meeting room.

14th July 2008

Dear Parent

We’ve had another highly successful year. The children really “aim for the stars” and all the staff do their very best to help every child to succeed because we believe “children matter and children come first”.

Last week, we received excellent news that another Quality Mark from the Basic Skills Agency has been awarded to the school in recognition for our continuing commitment to improve the children’s abilities in their reading, writing, speaking, listening and mathematics. The Assessor said “It was a privilege to be in school and to see what you have achieved together as a most effective team. Congratulations.”

We have also received complimentary remarks of the OFSTED Subject Survey for Personal, Social and Health Education which was conducted last month. It said “the children make good progress in their personal development and enjoy and value their PSHE work, especially where they find out about how to deal with real life situations. We are also pleased to learn that the children know how to stay safe and healthy and value their involvement in the local sports partnership.”

As you know the school closes for summer on Tuesday 22 July and reopens on Wednesday 3 September. There are quite a few happy end of term arrangements planned, which I would like to draw your attention to please

We are having a special leaving service for the Y6 children who will be moving on to secondary school in September.

Staff Leaving

Mrs Brookes is leaving because she has been appointed to Nun Monkton School as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant. Mrs Brooke’s contribution to both Shipton Street and Clifton Green Schools has been really outstanding and she will be missed for the willing commitment she has given over the time, as a member of staff, member of the SPA and a school governor. Her involvement in the life of the school, her enjoyment of supporting the children, and the successes she has achieved with so many youngsters are real qualities which make her a very special teaching assistant. The school wishes Mrs Brookes the very best of luck for the future.

Miss Garling and Miss Rutland

Both staff members complete their temporary contracts at the end of this term. The school is grateful for the work they have undertaken during their brief time at the school. Miss Garling has secured a teaching post at Wheldrake School.

New staff arriving this September

Miss Neville has been appointed as a full time teacher for KS2. Mrs Ryan is returning as a part time teacher. Miss Ravalia has been appointed to teach Y2 children with Mrs Calverley. Mrs Keir is appointed as a teaching assistant in the Foundation Stage and Miss McBride as a teaching assitant in Y1. Mrs Tyler is appointed to support a child in the Foundation Stage.

Thank you for the excellent support

Finally, as the end of term draws to a close may I, on behalf of everyone at the school, thank you all, as well as friends of the school, for the help and the support you have given over the past year.

The school has celebrated much success during 2007/08. We have achieved two national awards to mark the school’s commitment in teaching the Basic Skills and, being the first school in York to receive the Geography Mark. Earlier in the year, we were also one of the first schools to receive an Advanced Inclusion Award in recognition for our commitment to school inclusion.

Well done the children, well done the teachers and well done everyone!

All good wishes to you and your families this summer.

These are very positive findings particularly because parents and children have chosen the healthier options of walking or cycling to school. Thank you very much. We will include these findings in our School Travel Plan.

The Survey also raised other important concerns with suggestions for improvements.

Concerns : dog mess, glass on pavements, cyclists on pavements, children running ahead of parents, busy Water Lane and Burdyke Avenue road junctions, Heavy traffic on Crombie Avenue, Chidlren using the school driveway instead of the dedicated footpaths, children not crossing with the lollipop lady.

Suggested improvements: alley by the side of school to be cleared of dog mess, more dog waste bins, improve cycle/footpath, school sign near Lumley Road and Shipton Street crossings to reduce vehicle speed, methods for slowing traffic, dedicated school bus, side playground gate to be kept locked to encourage the children to use route round back of school which is safer, more secure bike shed.

Thank you for these concerns and suggestions for improvements. I can certainly talk to the children about what they should be doing to ensure they arrive and leave school safely. I also intend to raise some of these points with the Council. I have already alerted Helen Douglas, Local Councillor, about the need for more dog waste bins.

All in all, the Travel Survey was a very useful exercise and I am grateful to everyone who took part in it. Thank you.

Staff Leaving

Mrs Brookes is leaving because she has been appointed to Nun Monkton School as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant. Mrs Brooke’s contribution to Shipton Street  and Clifton Green schools has been really outstanding and she will be missed for the willing commitment she has given over the time, as a member of staff, member of the SPA and a school governor. Her involvement in the life of the school, her enjoyment of supporting the children, and the successes she has achieved with so many youngsters are real qualities which make her a very special teaching assistant. The school wishes Mrs Brookes the very best of luck for the future.

Dear Parent

We are asking that you support the school in a
Walk to School Week Survey

Walk to School Week Survey begins next week, Monday 19 May. As you know, the school was the winner of the Walk to School Week Competition which was organised by CYC and sponsored by Jack Archer, President of Age Concern last  October. Jack visited the school and presented a plaque and a cheque to some of our year 6 pupils. During that week, in October last year, 90.5% of our pupils walked to school. Second place entry was 86%.

Click here to see the web coverage when we
were awarded that plaque

The school is continuing to promote healthy active lifestyles for the pupils. So please if you could complete the Survey attached and return to the school by Thursday 22 May. The entries will be entered into a draw with the winner receiving £10. The information gathered from the survey will be used when we review our school travel plan.

Click here for Walk to School Website

Thank you for your support regarding school attendance. This is a really important time for the school because of the national testing taking place across the country for children in Y2 and Y6 and the other Year Groups undertaking annual tests to determine their progress. The information will enable the school to know what we need to do to further to help each child to succeed during this final part of the school year.

Thank you also for attending the Meet the Teacher sessions. We hope these meetings were useful and have helped you to know what support you need to give your child to enable them to succeed well with their learning.

Now on with the News

The school along with other local schools in the area displayed art work on Saturday 26 April in St Philip and St James’ Church as part of the National Hope Event being held in Christian churches throughout the country. Last week we were informed that the Y2 entry was the outright winner. Well done children in Y2!

11th April 2008

Dear Parent

We have planned lots of lovely experiences over the summer term which the children will really enjoy. However, as you know, this is an important time of the school year because the children in Y2 and Y6 will sitting national tests (like all other children in the country) to determine if they can achieve national standards or above. Equally, the other Year Groups in the school will be assessed to see if they have made good progress. As always, we ask for your support so your child is given the best posible chance to succeed.

Here’s how you can help:-

  • Ensure your child attends school and arrives punctually every day.
  • Avoid taking holiday at this time.
  • Make sure your child completes their homework, and returns it to school on time.
  • Listen to your child read every day. (A few parents in Mrs Taylor’s class are running a morning reading club so they read with their children before school starts and already this is making a difference to their children’s reading ability!)
  • Meet your child’s teacher to discuss the best way of helping your child over this period.
  • As a trial this year, we are having our Meet the Teacher Week much earlier than in July. It is in week beginning 21 April. This will enable you and your child’s teacher to discuss progress and the best way you can help your child to learn over the next few weeks. In July, you will receive your child’s Annual Report. There will be no meetings with parents at that time, unless you particularly request it. We think this arrangement will enable parents to really support the children’s learning during this crucial time of the school year. After the event, we will evaluate the new arrangement to determine if it is more effective and, of course, we would like your feedack as well!

Now on with the News

You may have noticed some odd looking characters around school? These are sculptures the children produced with an artist who visited the school at the end of last term. In the hall, you will see Wizard Of Oz people and there are keen sports people dotted around other places. The children really enjoyed working with the artist and we are very pleased to see the creative work produced. Well done children!

Air Ambulance in Yorkshire. Last Friday, we made an official presentation to Air Ambulance for the money we raised for the Charity - £194.61 plus money raised by Charleigh, Nathan, Ellie and Marshall’s mum and friends of the school. Well done everyone!

Music evening – Mrs Prier is currently arranging a music evening on 24 April. Details will be available later.

Mr Hay, the school caretaker, has retired after working at the school for 16 years! We are having a special assembly on Friday 18 April at 3.00pm and you are more than welcome to attend. We are pleased that Mr Pallister, who was employed as a part time caretaker at the school, has taken over as a full time caretaker.

Wednesday Club – Our Open the Book ladies, who run the Thursday morning assembly, have organised a Wednesday Story Time Club which is after school for parents and children, taking place in the Kingswater Centre. This is a Christian Club which enables everyone to have a fun time. Refreshments are included. To make it a success, we need as many families as possible to attend. Please do try and come along at 3.20pm.

Hope event – The school will be displaying some art work on Saturday 26 April in St Philip and St James’ Church as part of the National Hope Event being held in Christian churches throughout the country. Families are very welcome to visit to see the display.

Summer Term

KS1 tests start week beginning 6 May. KS2 tests start week beginning 12 May.

It is very important that your child attends school during the test weeks.

Good Wishes

Sheila  Audsley

Mr Hay has retired after working for 16 years at the school.

At the end of last term, Mr Hay suddenly made the decision to retire from his part-time position as school caretaker. Mr Hay has given the school excellent service over the past 16 years. He has been instrumental in making the school grounds so attractive and has given many additional hours to improve the facilities inside the school building. For many years, he organised and ran a very successful School Chess Club.

Mr Hay has been a friend to everyone. He has always been very willing to “have a go” and creatively make some excellent resources in the classrooms for the teachers to use to enhance their work with the children.

He has used his skills and talents in so many ways. For example, he did all the joinery work when the school was setting up a new ICT suite. He redesigned the staffroom to make it a bigger area in 2001. In the past two years, he redesigned an area to create the Nurture Classroom.

As well as making school improvements, he has been responsible for the day to day repairs which, over time, has saved the school a lot of money.

So, all in all, Mr Hay will be very much missed.

However, the school is extremely grateful for Mr Hay’s outstanding commitment and service and, with sincerity, wishes him the very best of luck for the future.

Thank you very much Mr Hay.

Retiring is not how
we would describe you.

We have a feeling
that it is the beginning of
another exciting
chapter in your life.
Whatever retirement
means to you,
may it bring greater
personal fulfilment
than you ever
thought possible.

Congratulations Mr Hay!

With love from

Everyone at Clifton Green School

Dear Parent

Thank you very much for the continued support over the term.

The children have done extremely well and should rightly feel very proud of their achievements.

Now on with the News – Busy children enjoying their school experiences!

Thank you very much for supporting World Book Day. It was fantastic to see the children dressed as their favorite book characters. We also entered a Big Time Rhyme event on Friday morning to help Great Ormond Street hospital break the Guinness Book of Records for the number of children and adults reading aloud at the same time. The event also managed to raise some money for this special children’s hospital.

School Safety

Thank you pedestrians for keeping to the safe pathway routes into school. Please could the parents who have children in Mr White’s, Miss Mould’s, Mrs Calverley’s and Mr Binn’s classes observe the correct entry/exit to school to avoid the current congestion in the corridor.

The Children’s Centre staff have been unable to park their vehicles when they arrive in a morning because parents of children attending the school are taking up the staff spaces. Please may I ask you to park outside the school site when bringing or picking up your child/children from school. Thanks.

 Swearing

It has been brought to my attention that some pupils are heard swearing on their way home from school and on the playground. Children using bad language is unacceptable and we strictly enforce a No swearing rule in school. Please may I ask parents for support and monitor the pupils on their way home so that we can put a stop to this unacceptable use of bad language. We will, of course, monitor the language being used by the children on the playground.

Please let me know if there are any pupils creating a nuisance on the way home, as this is also unacceptable.
