York City Knights Choir Challenge

On Tuesday Adam from York City Knights came to talk to us about a great offer. We can go to a special big game absolutely free if we learn two songs and sing them with other children at the match! Mr Murray will keep us informed about the date.

The songs we need to learn are  “When the Knights go Marching in”

And  “From a tiny ant”

Mr White has a copy of the music and we had a practice in the Tuesday assembly. More practices are to follow……..

The Ancient Egyptians

Lucy Adlington visits Year 6  - Friday, 10th December 2010

Once again Lucy visited Clifton Green Primary to ‘bring to life’ the Ancient Egyptians for the Year children.  The children have been studying this topic in their history lessons this half term.

Lucy is an actor, children’s author (and much more) who brings Ancient Egypt to life into the class room.  Her story telling and enthusiasm ignite the children’s imaginations.

Holding a piece of rock and sand (bought back from Egypt) the children are taken back in time by 5000 years!  It’s hot!   However, the heat is not the only danger; they have to watch for scorpions and other hazards.

So, what would the children have worn all those years ago?  In fact, many of the children would have worn none or very little clothing because of the high temperature; this caused much amusement amongst the children!  However, Lucy (dressed herself as a wealthy Egyptian) clothed a year 6 child as she might have been dressed all those years ago.  Emily (herself now a rich Egyptian with servants and living in a large house near the Nile) was dressed in a white tunic, a sash to accentuate the hips followed by a gold necklace (trimmed with Scarab Beetles), a black wig, golden sandals, green eye shadow to reflect the sun and finally Rose scented goose fat as a perfume.  Lucy bought the scene alive with her amazing stories which the children became involved in – they saw hippos in The River Nile and Scarabs scuttling across the floor.

The children bartered for their medicines swopping chickens, and eggs for the medicines they needed for keep them well.  Unfortunately, Georgia dies (we are still acting at this stage!)  The rest of the class become the ‘mourners’ - wailing and making lots of noise.  They learn about mummification – taking their body parts and putting them in kinetic jars - but leaving their hearts as this will be needed for the after life.  They then pack their bodies with mud to replace the missing parts.  Their bodies are then dried in salt and once dehydrated get a death mask.  They are then rubbed in oils and perfumes, wrapped in bandages and finally put into a sarcophagus.

Lucy goes through everyday life with the children – describing how they would work from the age of 5 years for their families; cooking, farming, making their clothes etc.

Now it was time to learn about the scribes and their importance in this ancient society.  Two children were chosen to scribe their names on a piece of papyrus using an ink pen and ink made from soot and gum – not an easy task but what fun!

The whole afternoon was full of fun learning!  They discovered that many of their toys that they played with when they were younger and games they now play originated from the Ancient Egyptians.

Lucy had the whole class engrossed in the afternoon of living in Ancient Egypt – reinforcing everything the children had learnt this half term – they loved it!

York Schools Dance Festival

On Saturday 20th November Clifton Green took part in the York Schools Dance Festival. The theme this year was Diversity and our dance club performed a piece to the music Melting Pot. The dance was a lyrical interpretation choreographed by Mrs Sturgeon who has been teaching them for eight weeks at dance club. They performed it beautifully and we were very proud of them all. They wore pale gold leotards and coffee coloured chiffon skirts and chokers with pink ballet shoes.

We all got to see dances from the other schools and our girls were wonderfully behaved and interested in all the dance styles.

Special thanks go to Mrs Prier for all her help organising the club, Mrs Sturgeon for teaching the dance and Mrs Morley and Mrs Britton for stewarding at the festival.

On Thursday at our last club session of the term we had a party….and of course did our dance again!

Anti-Bully Week At Clifton Green Primary School

15-19 November 2010

TAKING ACTION TOGETHER

Anti-bully week is supported across the country – this year’s theme was ‘Taking Action Together’.  As everybody knows bullying is wrong in many different ways, so during Anti-Bully week (15-19 November) our school decided to highlight this week by holding a competition.

The idea was simple – all children were invited to design a poster to highlight the problem of bullying with some of the older children writing a poem on the subject and other designing posters.  The number of entries was overwhelming; with the judges having an extremely difficult time when looking for a winner.

A prize was awarded for the best poster from each class, with a ‘special’ prize being given to the overall KS1 and KS2 winners.

Of course, this was not the end of the matter.  Hopefully, all children have been reminded about the unkindness of bullying and the effects it can have on the happiness of someone.  The children were reminded about what they should do if they feel they are being bullied.

The message is simple – we aim to stamp out bullying altogether by working as a team to help and support each other.

Canon Lee Music Day 2010

It was an exciting day on 18th November when the year 6 pupils visited Canon Lee School for a music workshop.

After an initial performance by Canon Lee school band, the children were split into groups to rehearse their skills for an afternoon performance.  Based on the musical Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat, some children joined in with the school band on keyboards and drums, while others practiced with violins and a cello.  The Samba Band was popular and loud, as was the rock band, both activities enjoyed by those who took part.  With singers learning a song from the musical, it was all put together for an afternoon performance attended by parents.

The event was a success, inspiring many pupils to take up music when they start secondary school, and showed the activities that will be available to them.

This was a ‘fun day’ for all!

CHILDREN IN NEED 2010

Children in Need 2010

Show Your Spots

What better way to show your spots than by wearing them.

Friday 19th November

A non-uniform day at Clifton Green School – with a spotty twist!

Everyone who makes a donation of 50p can come in wearing their own clothes

– just as long as they are wearing at least one item with spots on.

We raised £200 from our spotty support day. Pictures show Mrs C with KS1 spotty supporters and Mrs Neale “spotted” on the reception desk.

MENTAL MATHS CHALLENGE – 2010

Mental Maths - one of the most important aspects of numeracy – was highlighted throughout the school during the Autumn term – culminating in a mental maths challenge which took place in the school hall on Friday, 5th November.

In the days prior to the event – children practised the various skills required, including their ever important multiplication tables.

During the week of the challenge – two finalists were selected from each class to go forward to the final (held in the school hall) in front of their classmates.  These children had to answer numerous questions on all aspects of mental maths – with a winner being produced after some very close contests indeed.

At the end of the afternoon – the whole school gathered for a special assembly, to say “well done” to all those involved.  Each of the finalists was presented with a runners-up prize – while the outright winner in each age group received a numeracy based game.

The event was a complete success, giving the children the opportunity to develop their mental maths strategies – and realise that these skills are relevant not only in school, but for the rest of their lives.

Year 2  Ellis Grassby
Year 3 & 4John Tuffen
Year 5 & 6Athulya Babu

Harvest Celebrations

21st October 2010

(Scroll down to see Year One Celebrations too)

Our school was bursting at the seams with all the parents and friends who came to share their Harvest Festival this morning. They had a lovely service thinking about Harvest round the World and being thankful that they all had enough to eat and people who loved them. Parents had sent in produce for the festival which was arranged in a magnificent display and Mrs Pickard, the school cook made a super wheat sheaf made of bread as a centrepiece. School were  overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity.

All the children took part in the assembly with some wonderful song and poems being shared by children from 3 to 11year olds. The photographer took a picture of two children aged 6 who were dressed as vegetables from an English country garden who had performed  “Oliver’s Garden.” (The children were Lewis West and Abbie Franks )

During the afternoon, 60 pensioners enjoyed their afternoon tea of scones, cream and jam, looked after by Year 6 pupils, and took home very substantial food parcels.

Jean Calverley, acting headteacher thanked all the parents for their generosity to senior citizens in our community and was delighted so many parents and friends came to share the school’s family harvest celebration.

YEAR ONE HARVEST CELEBRATION

Oliver’s Vegetables

As part of Year 1’s Harvest Festival celebration we have performed a little play based on the book ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ by Vivian French. All the children did really well in both their performances and enjoyed performing in front of the whole school and to adults in the afternoon. Here is a short version for you to look at.............

This is Granddad and this is his grandson Oliver. The best thing about Granddads English Country garden was the wonderful vegetable patch

‘I grow all my own vegetables’ said Grandad.

‘I don’t eat vegetables, I only eat CHIPS!’ said Oliver.

‘If you want chips your must find the potatoes in the garden’ Granddad replied.

Oliver began to look around the vegetable patch for the potatoes.

‘Are these the Potatoes?’ said Oliver pulling at a plant.

‘No, they’re carrots!’ replied Granddad.

‘Are these the Potatoes?’ said Oliver pulling at another plant.

‘No, that’s spinach!’ replied Granddad.

‘Are these the potatoes?’ said Oliver pulling at another plant.

‘No, that’s Rhubarb!’ replied Granddad.

‘Are these the potatoes?’ said Oliver pulling at another plant.

‘No, that’s cabbage!’ replied Granddad.

‘Are these the potatoes?’ said Oliver pulling at another plant.

‘No that’s beetroot!’ replied Granddad.

‘Are these the potatoes?’ said Oliver pulling at another plant.

‘No, they’re peas!’ replied Granddad.

Oliver came the last patch of vegetables. ‘Are these the potatoes?’ he asked.

‘Yes, they are the potatoes!’ Granddad said excitedly.

Oliver only had one thing on his mind. He looked at Granddad and said ‘Can we have chips now please?’

‘Yes we can’ said Granddad.

Grandma came into the kitchen. ‘You scrub the potatoes and I’ll peel them’ she said.

There was a knock at the door. It was Oliver’s Mum. ‘Oh Oliver, not chips again!’ she said.

The End

The Selfish Giant

On Thursday (8/10/2010) we were lucky enough to have the Image Theatre Group visit us at Clifton Green. The  cast came to perform the story of ‘The Selfish Giant’ in front of the whole school .  A number of pupils, picked from volunteers by the actors, also had the opportunity to take part in the play itself and did a wonderful job of remembering their lines.  The audience (the whole school!) were excellent as well as they participated in parts of the story and showed the theatre company what fantastic singing voices we have here at Clifton Green.

We’re really looking forward to doing some work on this classic Oscar Wilde story.

If you have done any pictures or writing about the Selfish Giant please let Mrs Calverley have them and we will scan the best onto the website.

Shoebox Appeal 2010

Operation Christmas Child

Dear Parent,

Once again Clifton Green would like to ask for your help. We would like to join in with this appeal. Operation Christmas Child sends a message of hope to children in need around the world through gift-filled shoe boxes. It is the world’s largest children’s Christmas project. Since 1990 the project has brought the joy of Christmas to more than 80 million boys and girls throughout the world. We think it is an excellent charity for school to be involved with as children helping children is something they can understand and a way they can make a difference.

Last year nearly 1.2 million
shoe boxes were sent from the UK to children in hospitals, orphanages, homeless shelters and poor communities.

With your help we want to reach even more children in the poorest parts of the world in 2010.

First you need to decide whether to fill a box for a girl or a boy and what age: 2-4 years,5-9 years or 10-14 years old. Then we ask you to cover a shoebox in Christmas paper and fill it with:

• new small toys: games, puzzles, soft toys, balls, car (no playing cards)

• school supplies: pencils, pens, rubber, sharpener, felt pens, paper, colouring book, notepad, chalk, crayons

• toiletries: soap, flannel, toothpaste, toothbrush, comb, brush (no bottles)

• something to wear: hat, scarf, gloves, necklace,

• sweets: lollipops, chews, toffees, boiled sweets (no chocolate)

• £2.50 to help with transport costs

If you would like to contribute but don’t want to make a whole box please send individual items into school so we can make up class boxes. Mrs Britton, Year 1 teaching assistant will organise these and she is sending off the boxes.

We need to receive the boxes no later than
Monday 4th November

as it takes more

than a month to get the boxes checked and transported to. If you want any further information about the programme please look at www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk.

Yours faithfully

Jean Calverley

We all gave Mrs Audsley our head teacher a good send-off.

She retired after 37 years teaching in the city at the end of term.

In 1973, while completing her training at St John’s College, she was accepted for the “pool” of new teachers in York. She was allocated a post at Haxby Road School, where she was a class teacher.

She remained there until she was appointed as deputy head teacher at Kingsway Junior School in 1986.

In 1991 she was appointed head teacher of Skelton County Primary School, where she worked for nine years. In 2000 she returned as acting head teacher at Kingsway Junior School and she was appointed as head teacher shortly afterwards of Clifton Green Primary School – the result of the merger between Kingsway Junior and Shipton Street Infant School.

We will miss her greatly but hope she has a long and happy retirement.

We had a wonderful party for her complete with a beautiful cake made especially for the occasion.

DT Week
July 2010

We have had a fantastic week making many different structures including a Viking Long Boat, a Victorian Crystal Palace, Bird Houses and Skyscrapers. We worked as individuals and as teams to construct our many frames.

Can you remember which shape was the strongest?

40th Birthday

40th Anniversary
1970 – 2010

On Thursday 1st July Clifton Green Primary School celebrated the 40th anniversary of it’s opening. It opened as Kingsway Junior School but became Clifton Green Primary in 2001 when it merged with Shipton Street Infants.

On Thursday the children celebrated this occasion by taking part in a special assembly dedicated to all the decades that the school has lived through. They had been working on their items throughout the week.

Our Foundation Stage children focused on all decades celebrating their favourite books that were written throughout these years. They looked at ‘The Hungry Little Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle, first published in the 1970’s, ‘Billy’s Beetle’, first published in the 1980’s, ‘The Gruffalo’ first published in the 1990’s, and finally ‘Charlie and Lola’ first publishes in the 2000’s. Which would be your favourite?

Year 1 focused on the Silver Jubilee year of 1977. The children dressed up and talked about the Queen’s journey around the world during this special year. They also showed how people celebrated with street parties making their own bunting, flags and hats for the assembly. Everyone loves a party!

Year 2 looked at the 1980’s and produced a marvellous video based on the Michael Jackson song ‘Thriller’ The whole school loved the video, especially watching it on the big screen and particularly enjoyed seeing all the Year 2 children making scary faces on camera!

Year 3 showed us what it was like to live in the 1990’s as well as showing important dates that had occurred during this decade. They reminded us the release of Nelson Mandela, the death of Princess Diana and that the popular film Titanic was released.

Have you seen this film?

Year 4 taught us all about the fashions and inventions of the 1970’s. Their vibrant presentation included music and toys of the time. Popular toys included Paddington Bear and Action Man. Well done to all those who dressed up – you all looked fabulous!

Year 5 talked about the events that occurred during the 1980’s. We saw the invention of mobile phones and looked at the fashions and music of the time. The 1980’s celebrated two Royal marriages together with the birth of the internet. Technology took off in the 1980’s!

Year 6 explained the impact that the 1970’s has on today’s fashion and music. They performed some interesting renditions of songs from the time including YMCA by the Village People, and Staying Alive by the Bee Gees - as well as the actions that went along with these songs. It was great to see the whole school joining in with these, as well as parents showing their dance floor moves too!

In the afternoon everyone had buns and drinks and a long playtime!

Well done to everyone who took place and more importantly

Happy 40th Birthday

Carlton Lodge Outdoor Pursuit Centre

Residential Visit.

All the children and staff that went on the Carlton Lodge residential visit from Year 5 May 2010.

After a year of anticipation the day had come at last when all the Year 5 children went on their outdoor residential visit to Carlton Lodge near Thirsk.

During the amazing 3 days the children got to experience a range of action packed activities.

Please look at the following photographs to see what we got up to!

Getting to grips with the Climbing Wall!

Honestly! Not all our time was spent hanging around on the Zip Wire!

Take aim… Fire! Some of us were a crack shot when going for the Bulls eye.

Canoeing was fun.

Making our own raft was a real challenge. We really hoped that it wouldn’t sink! The only way to find out was to get on the water and test it.

Going, Going, Gone! The rope bridge was a lot more challenging than it looked! However, it was great fun – we even went on again! Fortunately, there was a nice warm shower to look forward to.

Would you dare to take the ultimate challenge and do the Leap of Faith?

Could you jump from a 30ft high plank and try and hit the ball? Fortunately, we were tied to a safety rope.

Author
Rose Impey
visits Clifton Green.

One cold and wet Wednesday morning in March we were delighted to welcome the famous author Rose Impey. She talked to Year1, Year2, Year4, Year 5 and Year 6 about some of her books and what it is like to be an author. All these classes really enjoyed hearing her speak. She also signed books for children at the end of the sessions. Many of us got good ideas for writing stories from Rose’s entertaining sessions.

We have a lot of her books in the Library – so if any children heard an excerpt from one of her books and want to read more they will be able to borrow them. Of course, there has been a bit of a rush on them this month so you might have to be patient for the one you want!

Drama Festival

March 2010

“The Green Children”.

Children from Clifton Green took part in the drama festival at York University in March. The theme this year was “Tall Tales” and we performed a dramatisation of “The Green Children”.

The Green Children is an intriguing folktale, originating from the 12th century, when 2 green children, speaking a strange language, reportedly appeared in the village of Woolpit, in Surrey. But just who were these children and where did they come from?

The drama group, which consists of 20 children ranging from Yr3-Yr6, created their own version of the story, bringing it to life through story telling, acting and song.  For the past two months, they met regularly on a Monday after school and even gave up some of their lunchtimes to practise and rehearse their piece.

This was a story full of intrigue, laughter, sadness and joy. Everybody enjoyed Clifton Green’s adaptation of “The Green Children”.

 Well done Drama Group!

Thanks to Mrs.Hobson and Miss.Holdsworth for organising everything and thanks to all the other adults who helped, especially Mrs.Tuffen for helping with the costumes.

Magic and Make Believe Day

Children came to school for this special day dressed as characters of magic and make believe.
George was a dragon and Megan a white rabbit coming out of a hat!
There were princesses, a pack of cards, fairy tale folk and traditional tale characters.
Their teachers were dressed up too!

play               stop

We had a wonderful day with a visit from our new friend
Magic Mike the magician to start things off.

We were amazed by his tricks and magic and amused by his friend the blue parrot!  He turned children into his assistant for some tricks and rewarded them with balloon prizes. His balloon snail was amazing!

After Magic Mike we had five stories. Each teacher told a different magic story and the children went round the classes to hear them. Mrs Calverley told the Three Wishes and Miss Mould told the Twelve Dancing Princesses – just two of the super tales told.

Next we had refreshments (lemonade and fairy cakes!)

Finally we played There was a Princess Long Ago – where we all enjoyed singing about the characters and the scenery!

Tired but happy we all went back to our classrooms and on to our homes.

What a lovely day at school.

On Thursdays we usually have a KS1 Bible assembly but today our friends David and Margaret came to our Book Assembly. David was dressed as Harry Potter but we still got him to sing “Hey it’s a Lovely Day” with us!

Food to Share

25th February, 2010

A sociable and relaxing evening was had by everyone who attended the Food to Share evening on Thursday, 25th February.

The evening began with the beautiful Indian dancing from Perveen.  She entertained us with a dance routine of four different styles of Indian dance.  The children were eager to learn and demonstrate their Indian dancing skills after Perveen showed them the movements – this was very much enjoyed by the parents.

The rest of the evening was spent enjoying the delicious dishes made by parents – the tastes and smell were tantalising!   Everyone was given a chance to sample food that they may never have tasted before and parents were able to share their knowledge of cooking!

Many different countries were represented during the evening from:

India, Taiwan, Poland, United Kingdom, Turkey, Nepal, Thailand and Germany.  This is just a sample of the diversity within out school and demonstrates how this contributes to the success of our pupils to socialise with each other.

Many parents have expressed an interest in gathering recipes from the evening to put into a book – I will endeavour to pursue this – watch this space!

Venturefest 2010

Venturefest Yorkshire is a one-day business conference and exhibition event which took place in the Knavesmire Stand at York Racecourse.  The event focuses on encouraging enterprise, science, technology and IT and is an expo of Yorkshire’s most inspiring science, technology and knowledge entrepreneurs.

The spirit of Venturefest is all about encouraging innovation and potential entrepreneurs.  It is important that creativity is identified and nurtured at the earliest possible age.

Year 6 Clifton Green Primary School got the opportunity to participate in this event through NYBEP.  At the beginning of last term they took part in an animation project – to put into pictures (and then into motion) their vision of the poem written by W H Auden, The Night Mail.

As a reward for putting together a talk to present to the Year 1’s in the school (about the above project),  Kelsey Finney, Grace Hobson and Jessica Taylor put up an exhibition and manned it at Venturefest.  They spoke eloquently and with enthusiasm to everyone that approached their stand – explaining how the project began, how it developed and what they had learnt from the whole process.

During the day all three girls had the opportunity to interview a member of STEM (a national scheme aimed at raising awareness and creating excitement about Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).  This gave them an insight into how their interviewee got into their job, what they wanted to do when they were younger - as part of the schools ongoing aspirations work.

All three girls thoroughly enjoyed their day out, were encouraged by the things that they saw at other exhibits and enthused when talking to other delegates – a very productive day!

Games Night - 2010

A fun evening was had by all that attended the Games Night on 4th February, 2010.  The evening kicked off with the fast and furious game of Beetle – the noise of the rolling dice and laugher reverberated around the hall!

This was quickly followed by a warm-up game of bingo – which then lead us to a breather for refreshments.  However, our brains were still to be tested with the children’s and adult’s picture quizzes.  Then it was down to the serious business of a final game of bingo – the atmosphere was very tense as children and adults focused on the winning numbers!

Congratulations to all – everyone was a winner!

Thank you to all who supported this evening – our next family evening is to be held on 25th February with our Food To Share evening – an event which celebrates the diversities within our community.

Reach for the Stars!

The picture is of the table decoration that Miss Holdsworth and her Year 4 children did for the National Education Conference held in York recently – schools were invited to enter a table decoration and most of them did.

This was a competition and our entry came 2nd winning the school £50 worth of Art materials.

The decoration was brought back to school and can be seen in the Library.

Everyone will agree it’s motto of "Reach for the Stars"  sums up pupil attitudes at Clifton Green!

School Library Artwork.

This week children will have noticed some artwork appearing in the Library. This time it is not our own work but some wonderful imaginative illustrations by local artist Sue Wallis. Sue came to visit the school and talked about our ideas for the library and got a feel for how we felt about our library. Then she created these lovely, imaginative pieces for us. There are panels on the door saying “Welcome to our Library” and a picture with a quote from Dr Seuss saying;-

“The more that you read, the more things that you know, The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go!”

There are lots of little things to find in the pictures and there are a number of fictional characters portrayed that we can weave our own stories around.

Parents and friends that have not seen the new artwork are very welcome to pop in and have a look.

Lord Mayor of York
Visits Our School

January 2010

On a very snowy Friday morning we were honoured by the visit of The Lord Mayor of York.

He spoke to the whole school in the hall and had a cup of tea and a scone. He has been trying to loose weight so the picture shows him resisting a scone and choosing instead a carrot and an apple!

The Lord Mayor, Lady Mayoress and The Sherriff and her Consort then went round all the classes meeting the children.

They stopped to talk to Year 6 children in the library about their dreams and aspirations when they were young.

It was wonderful for the children to hear some of York’s civic history and get to meet the civic party .
