CLIFTON GREEN
PRIMARY SCHOOL

WELCOME TO YEAR 6

This is a very important year for year 6 children as it is their last year at Clifton Green Primary School and they will be preparing to go on to their secondary schools.  The children will be encouraged to take on more responsibilities for themselves, for instance ensuring they have their PE kit in school for games, to learn their tables and so on.  Along side this the children will be participating in activities within school, these will include serving tea and talking to the senior citizens who come to our harvest festival, showing visitors around school and showing responsibility towards the younger children in school.

Parents are encouraged to support their children within school.  This includes encouraging them to complete and hand their homework in on time, to learn their tables and listen to them read.

TIMETABLE FOR ACTIVITIES

Swimming              Wednesday afternoon               £2

Half of the class will be swimming this term (letters have already been sent home for those children) and the rest of the children will be swimming in the summer term.

Earrings must be removed by the pupil for safety reasons.

PE                         PE may be indoors or outdoors, depending on the weather conditions.  Mr Reed and Mr Binns encourages the children to take responsibility for ensuring they have their PE kit in school.  The PE kit should include a pair of black shorts and a white T-shirt plus a pair of plimsolls/outdoor training shoes.

Earrings will have to be removed by the pupil during this lesson for safety reasons.

The PE lesson will be on a Monday afternoon.

Homework             The children will receive literacy homework on a Friday to be handed in on Monday morning and numeracy homework will be on a Monday to be handed in on Wednesday morning. This should take them one hour to complete and should be returned to school for marking.  This is very important for the children to do as it indicates to Mr Reed and Mr Binns whether the children have understood the past week’s lessons and enable him to flag up with any children who have misunderstood any aspect of a lesson.

Tables                   It is very important for the children to learn their tables.  This will help them with all aspects of their numeracy work.  Those children who do not know their tables find the lessons a lot harder and so it is in their interests to learn their tables to make their numeracy lessons easier.

Spellings               The children will receive 10 spellings on a Monday morning to learn during the week for a spelling test on Friday.  Parents are encouraged to support their children at home with their spellings by encouraging them to learn them and testing them at home.

MASKS – DESIGNED BY YEAR 6

As part of their art and PHSE work, Year 6 made a study of feelings, and how we express those feelings through facial expressions.

The final result was to develop their initial planning work into collaged masks.

Look at the masks:

  • Can you recognise the different feelings being expressed?
  • Which are the good and evil characters?
  • How do the different masks make you feel yourself?

ARTS WEEK

Participating in Arts Week meant that Year 6 pupils enjoyed a day of paper sculpting with the visiting artist Rick Havely – we themed our models on The Wizard of Oz – the book we have been reading in class.  A fun day was had by all, as the children worked in teams of 7 or 8 to construct their chosen characters.  Some children got totally wrapped up in the project, becoming moulds in the construction of arms and legs – having newspapers wrapped around their limbs.

Eventually all the body parts were tapped together to complete their projects

YEAR 6 GEOGRAPHY RIVER TRIP

Have you had the pleasure of walking along the banks of The River Ouse?  The children in Year 6 had the chance to do this on Friday, 28 September as part of their geography course work.  Why not read on to find out what we learnt and what a brilliant day we had…

The day started with the walk to Clifton Bridge – everyone was really excited about the day ahead of them.  We stood on the flood embankment and Mr Reed explained how flooding had affected the City of York and that now with the introduction of the flood defences the City was a much drier place!  We looked at the way the river curved and how sand/mud deposits were left on the inside of the meander, whilst the water eroded the outer banks on the outside of the meander.

Can you imagine not being able to cross to the other side of the city because there is a river in your way?  This was the problem people had to overcome before Clifton Bridge, Ouse Bridge, Skeldergate Bridge and Lendal Bridge were built.  So, how did people get across?  We learnt that the river used to be tidal and when the tide was low, although muddy, people were able to cross to the other side.  Another way to cross was by ferry, however, today we have the luxury of crossing over the bridges.  We found out that the bridges were constructed out of a number of materials – stone and cast iron for example.

Over the years the City of York has developed – we had to think about what the river and its banks were once used for and how this had changed.  We decided that the main use today was for tourism ranging from boat trips to restaurants and bars along the rivers banks.

In all, we walked about 7 kilometres – we were a lot quieter when we got back!
